Sudden battery draining issue

Hi everyone,

I've been using Graphene OS for the past few months and love it. But for the past week out of the blue my phone's battery has been going down much much quicker. I don't see any non system apps that are using a lot of battery in the settings, but I didn't check there before I had the issue.

If anyone knows of any solutions or has any idea of what could be going on please let me know.

RRZishe Maybe your carrier just "enhanced" your area with more 5G? Try turning it off?

If you provide some of your stats I'm sure, others will be able to say whether their numbers are comparable.

Does the issue persist on Wi-Fi as well as on mobile connection?

[deleted] Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm not really tech savvy and I'm not sure which stats are relevant or what they are, so if someone can point me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.

The issue is the same over Wi-Fi and over mobile data. I'm connected to Wi-Fi 22 out of 24 hours a day.

RRZishe You can take a screenshot of Settings > Battery > Battery Usage and maybe even Settings > Network & internet > Internet > Non-carrier data usage if you don't mind making this information public record.

These look pretty high indeed, but could be caused by something unapparent like poor cell signal, excessive sync operations, adaptive brightness etc. Are there any foreground services (Active apps) running on your devices? For comparison, I'm running latest GrapheneOS on a Pixel 6a. My current idle stats from my last full charge are at 25% at 2 days 2 hours and 30 minutes and System CPU stands at 16%. At my current usage I have another 7 hours left. There've been similar reports of idle battery drain if you're interested.

[deleted] I couldn't figure out how to upload a pic so I just typed what it said in Settings > Battery > Battery Usage. I also checked the non carrier network usage and almost all of it is from before the issue started, like osmand and antenna pod which I used like 20 days ago, but haven't since the issue started

I have a very good cellular and Wi-Fi connection virtually always. I did recently installed ente which which automatically syncs photos, but it only used 1% and 30 minutes in the foreground and 4 minutes in background, so I don't think that it's the cause. I have two matrix clients that for some reason don't use Google push notifications, but they're both set restricted battery use.

Thank you for sending that link but I don't think that most of those solutions if any of them are possible to implement on graphene OS.

In any case, it's not a GrapheneOS related issue, however much it might feel like it is. Battery drain is almost always user-specific and dependent on ones apps and configuration. It happens across the board.

If lots of people running GrapheneOS don't experience the issue (which seems true), and meanwhile some people not running GrapheneOS do experience the issue, what makes it seem like a GrapheneOS issue?

As a random example, perhaps your device's battery is suddenly going bad. That would probably be a battery issue.

It could be a GrapheneOS issue triggered by a particular application mix. Or it could be a problem with one or more apps that would also occur if those apps were run on AOSP or on Google's OS.

RRZishe This is not a GrapheneOS issue. I've been using the OS for the past few years on several Pixel devices and have never had any battery drain issues.

[deleted] I have experienced occasional battery drain on both GrapheneOS and stock. These were usually resolved with either some tinkering on my part or monthly updates, but likely caused by some particular application mix. Anecdotally, my Pixel running GrapheneOS, for all its ostensible limitations, is the least problematic Android device I ever owned.

RRZishe There are south of 200k of GrapheneOS users and any time something is affecting their user base, it's very quickly reflected in their GitHub issue tracker by multiple users reporting the same issue. There are no such issues last time I looked.
