L8437 my problem with antivirus programs is that they invade my privacy a lot just to give me a little bit more protection through badness enumeration. I can see that might be valuable to companies or families with shared devices, but I'd rather make educated decisions and keeping good opsec myself than trusting a third party with all my files and information to protect me.
Android and especially GOS are inherently more secure than Windows, so I use that for as many things as I can. When on Desktop, I use a good Linux Distribution whenever possible. Linux is far less secure, but also not targeted as much as Windows or MacOS. If I have to use Windows or MacOS, I will simply keep their onboard defender apps and settings active. Knowing that my privacy is invaded already by Microsoft and Apple, I don't see much value in giving a third party with less control further access to my data.
But again, this only works if you make informed decisions. The biggest security flaw most of the time is the user. Don't install auspicious apps, click links in emails or files you can't verify, keep your systems up to date and use safe passwords and 2FA. Segregate and compartmentalize when possible and you'll be such a hard target that no antivirus company can give you additional security.
