Can't send SMS if preffered sim is set to "Ask every time"

Hi all,
I recently switched to GrapheneOS, I use 2 sim cards and when sending/receiving message I want to choose which sim to use for sending. My settings are set to Ask every time.

So before typing and SMS I tap on send button, and the choice of sim cards pops out, I select which sim I want to use.

However as I start typing the message, send button changes to green arrow and if I tap on it I get "No preferred SIM for sending SMS messages". If I tap and hold the send button I get selection of SIMs again but my selection is ignored.

As a workaround I can go to the settings, set the preffered SIM card for messages, then send the message and then revert the settings if I want to use other sim. Not a great experience.

Is there a user friendly way how to set which SIM I use for which message (ideally remembered by threat) or do I need to set preffered every single time?

Following. I have been using pulse sms that sometimes (usually?) works with dual Sims. It's just been annoying because of the same setting. Even when I set a thread to specifically use a #im it will sometimes fail and not tell me. I just find out later when I'm told they never got the text.

Wanting to see what others are doing with dual Sim and text. I'm with OP. I want it set to "ask every time" but am hoping others have had better success than I.
