User2288 I use Spotify Lite (the only non-FOSS app I have in my main profile), I understand it has much less telemetry, but your comment has made me paranoid. I understand that YT based solutions like InnerTune, do not offer the same sound quality.

I'm sorry to pass my own paranoidness to you, its not my intention. But truth is they theoretically CAN do it, such scripts have been demonstrated on this forum already. In the end it may not be a big deal in your case. So give that some thought.

Spotify paid is true 320kbs mp3. Spotify free is 160kbs mp3.
YT music free is 128kbs. YT paid is 320kbs, however all YT music sounds worse than other providers for some reason, this the opinion of professional audiophiles after testing.

Tidal offers lossless as well as MQA but aparently that costs more than other services. The higher quality is only worth it if you are using more expensive headphones and DAC and Amp.

Youtubemusic and Spotify both have very degraded audio quality. The only ones that offer CD quality are tidal and qobuz, with a special mention for quobuz, which lets you download albums.

User2288 Thank you for your detailed reply. I've been testing InnerTune with my Sony WF-1000XM4, and I don't notice any difference with the quality of Spotify (I guess because of the limitation of being wireless), but unfortunately, InnerTune freezes or forcefully closes very often, I will investigate if it doesn't happen with any previous version and I will seriously consider leaving Spotify behind.

I understand that in a summarized way the 2 ways to listen to non-local streaming music are:

Spotify, Tidal, etc., of which we must assume that to a greater or lesser extent, without invasive with the user's privacy.
FOS apps derived from youtube such as InnerTune, Spotube, etc.

Wireless headphones necessarily have to use their own onboard dac and amplifier which are generally very sub par. On my lg v30 with its special dac/amp + Ultrasone 580 or dt 990, i can easily hear the difference between 128k 160k and 320k.

The tell tail sign of the quality of the hardware chain you have is to figure out at which point can you not tell the differences between these audio quality tiers. On a not too expensive setup (400$) most people hear the difference at the hardest levels (lossless VS 320k mp3)

Actually a 3rd option exists.

You download and build your own collection at home. Create a streaming server, and then you connect to the server from anywhere in the world.

No ads, no tracking, any quality you want, as many users as you want.

But a spotify or tidal experience and the "complete" collection is hard to beat.

I’m yet to try GrapheneOS, even though I have been lurking for years. I’m weighing my options and watching the scene, waiting to dive in. It’s going to be soon I’m sure.

But I use Spotube on my Linux machine. I would be very interested to see if it’s available on Android and whether it works well on GOS. It’s an excellent privacy friendly Spotify\YT front end.
