Cell phone carriers and Graphene OS

Hello. I want to get a Google Pixel 6a phone with Graphene OS on it.

Question: How is your experience with the default text messaging app on Graphene with your phone carrier?

I'm currently on Verizon; my concern is that the default messaging app will not work when I go to switch over to the Google Pixel with Graphene installed on it. With my current phone (a junky Verizon exclusive with Android 8 on it), if I do not have Verizon's Message+ app set as the default, I am not able to get text messages from others that use the regular text messaging apps.

I still have friends and family members that will not use private messaging apps, so I need the default messaging app to work.

mystery-chick I have a 6a on Verizon and SMS/MMS work fine with the default app. I have never used Verizon's Message+ on any phone. It is possible that if you use Message+ now you need to have them turn it off before regular SMS/MMS will work.

mystery-chick I use Telenor, a telecommunications provider in Norway.

While I generally prefer using Signal for communication, there are instances when I have to send a SMS messages.

I must admit that I strongly dislike SMS, but surprisingly, I haven't encountered any issues with using a physical SIM from Telenor in conjunction with GrapheneOS.

I have Verizon and the messaging app on GrapheneOS works perfectly fine. The one thing to keep in mind with Verizon is that they lock the bootloader on their devices and you won't be able to install GrapheneOS on the Pixel 6a. What you'll want to do is buy a 6a whose OEM is unlockable. The Google store is your best bet as ironic as that may sound. A lot of devices on eBay, Amazon, etc are advertised as "unlocked" but that is in regards to Carrier and not OEM.

Side note: Please remove the "Apps (app repo client)" tag. Your post has nothing to do with the GrapheneOS App repo client.

SMS is working fine, without any issues. If you have any issue with it starting out, double check the APN settings and you should be good to go. I have tested quite abit of phone carriers and so far they all work.
