Are notifications through play services encrypted?

I’ve read some conflicting information about this and would like to see if there is a definitive answer on if notifications fed through play services (say for apps such as signal, email apps, voip apps like mysudo) are encrypted or can google read the contents of such notifications?

applesbana It depends on how apps use notifications. Apps can send the content of the notification as part of the notification itself (in which case Google can read the notification), or use the notification as a wakeup event and retrieve the content somewhere else and generate the notification locally.

Applications can actually (if they choose to) send encrypted notification payload.
To determine if they do, you'll need to check the source code of the application and see if they're doing the payload decryption.
