GrapheneOS Support for Nothing Phone?

Hello all! The Nothing Phone 2 was recently announced and put on pre-order and I am honestly really interested. The Nothing Phone is a really cool concept, but I don't want to leave GrapheneOS anytime soon. Would it be possible for GOS to support the Nothing Phone? There are only a few models, so it wouldn't be like trying to support Samsung. Also, unlike Samsung, you can unlock the bootloader on the Nothing Phone 1, so it is likely you will be able to unlock it on the Nothing Phone 2. GOS support on something other than a Pixel would be a nice way to have GOS without directly/indirectly supporting Google by buying the phone (assuming the hardware security is anywhere near that of Pixels).

If support is possible, would GOS be able to handle the lights on the back? Maybe a partnership with Nothing to get the control apps bundled with the Nothing GOS install?

Obviously responses to this post won't be taken as gospel, but it would be cool to see some meaningful discussion about it.

thedylanarts Considering it's never been discussed, it likely won't meet the security requirements just like the first one. Unlocking the bootloader isn't the only requirement.

By the looks of it it's just the same phone but a bit faster and a better camera, I am not hopeful.

You are talking as if supporting Google is the same as funding a terrorist organization. You have misunderstood the purpose of GrapheneOS. We do not like Google's privacy policy and want a phone without Google's software, but we are not trying to kill Google as a company. Without Google, there is no Android and without Android, Apple will not have any competition.

I imagine the developers are more interested in improving what exists than expanding to less secure phones.

Buy a pixel, and keep it simple.

thedylanarts Its not exactly a 'security risk' to port grapheneOS to the nothing phone, but the hardware itself doesn't provide the security that Graphenes devs want to have in the operating system

So why port technology that doesn't meet standards when you can just improve the content of a small collection of devices with high end security on a hardware level

Being able to relock the bootloader with third-party OS is needed, Which Most OEMs don't care to implement since they do not have to accomodate to security-focused users or developers.

BTW, there are many requirements, not just Support for Verified Boot on Third-party OSes.

Other OEMs also release security patches late, and often not implemented in a proper manner. Google is the only OEM currently that meets these basic requirements.

SoulKeeper Lol I know that. It is just something to think about... I don't want to send money Google's way if I don't have to. I would rather send that money to a open source developer if I can. I know Nothing doesn't really do anything with open source, but it is more of a thing to consider than an irrational hatred of Google. I get what you are saying too. Support them for things we like (secure mobile hardware, Android) while not supporting what we don't like (targeted advertisements). At the end of the day, that is what we are all doing. We are avoiding sending our private data to Google to be processed, sold, and used to extract more money from us... or worse, have our lives ruined because we did something bad (or appeared to do something bad).

thedylanarts Google's Titan chip is open source lol, and you can get their firmware too by asking them nicely
