Different keyboard experience between apps?

Do I need to enable something on the stock keyboard to access emojis? I've noticed I can only access on a small selection of apps.

Also, when typing on Amethyst I've noticed if I make a spelling mistake and press backspace to edit it removes the space between the word I'm trying to edit and the word before, this makes for a frustrating typing experience. It doesn't seem to do this on any other app which is strange, I'd assume it'd be the same regardless where the keyboard is used?

Any ideas or settings I can tweak? Yes Google keyboard works much better and is constant between apps but I would rather avoid if possible even with revoked network permissions. I'm a minimalist and would rather used the AOSP keyboard.

How are you typing the emojis? As far as I know, you should be able to show all the emojis in your keyboard by holding the enter (return) button and releasing over the emoji icon that appears. That's part of the keyboard and doesn't depend on which app you are typing in 😊
