Restoring data from old phone running stock OS

Hi All !

So I'm currently using a pixel 4a 5G with the stock OS. I just bought a 7 pro and installed GrapeneOS on it and was wondering what are the best steps to transfer/restore my data like contacts, photos, whatsapp, etc from the stock OS into the freshly installed GrapheneOS.

Hi there!

You will need to restore data manually, I'm afraid. The easiest way to copy all your files over is using a USB drive. You can copy all documents, photos, etc. this way.

Some apps have their own internal backup mechanism, like Signal, Aegis, Tasks.org, etc. You can backup those on your 4a, and then copy across the backup files to your 7 Pro the same way.

You can backup your Contacts to a .VCF file with the default Phone app. If you want to restore SMS messages and call logs also, you can use an app like: https://github.com/tmo1/sms-ie

You can restore WhatsApp data using a Google Drive backup, or manually, by copying the Android/media/com.whatsapp directory from your 4a to 7 Pro.

treequell Got it ! So quick question, how do I copy the whatsapp directory from one phone to the other ?

Jrose01 You can copy the WhatsApp directory via a USB drive, like how I suggested for the the other backup files. Via a PC would also work too.

If you are to lazy to connect your phone to the PC, you could also use a FOSS-App like LocalSend (https://github.com/localsend/localsend) to directly send files from one device to the other. That might be a bit quicker, assuming your devices are on the same WLAN.
