File Transfer Issue on macOS and W10

While I think it worked before I reset my phone, I am unable to initiate file transfer via the Android File Transfer program on macOS running Ventura 13.4. Every time I connect my Pixel 7 via USB-C cable to the device, Android File Transfer pops up and says the following:

Could not connect to device
Try reconnecting or restarting your device

Use USB for is on File Transfer on my phone and I have tried switching it to other options under Use USB for without any luck.

I have not had any success on my W10 device ever. The File Explorer containing the phone's contents doesn't automatically pop up nor does it show as a Device or drive on on This PC. However, I see on Device Manager Android Device::Google Nexus ADB Interface

AFT is a bit capricious.
I do not use Windows but for mac... :
Restarting you Mac (and your Pixel too maybe) can solve this issue (for me it worked).
1 connect the device
2on Mac, click on "authorize" the device to connect, if it asks you.
3 AFT will say that you have to enable MTP.
4 Close AFT (Mac) and enable MTP on your Pixel
5 open AFT.
You are ready to go.

And make sure you did not select "disallow USB peripherals" on your Pixel in Security > USB devices

Mac's Android File Transfer Behaves badly on my system as well. Restarting macOS usually helps, sometimes it doesn't. Not sure whose fault this is - it feels like perhaps some permissions are missing, but the Android doesn't present a dialog asking for permission to trust this Mac.

I don't know where to look for the logs to figure out the root cause of the problem. Does anyone perhaps know how to debug the issue?

Not what you asked but It's the other way around. If you activate the security option that makes the Mac ask the user to approve connections to the mac, it asks you.
