It might be specific to the 6a if the camera isn't as good as the others but seems the stock graphene os app is taking blurry pictures.
Tried to download the Google cam app but to view the pictures I take, I need to download google photos.

I don't want to have bunch of google apps on there. Any suggestions?

No, you don't. G camera works w/o G photos. Just use you preferred gallery app for photos preview.

You will not find it in G cam, I mean to use the gallery app, not the shortcut within the G cam which points out to G photos.

Right but the pictures I take aren't getting added to the gallery app.

Hmm, could you please check the YourDevice | DCIM | Camera folder with Files app?
The Graphene's camera names them IMG_date_time, while G Cam does it PXL_date_time.

It should work with Graphene built-in Gallery app, despite you can find it a bit limited. For a more convenient way, you can try installing 3rd party app, e.g. SImple Gallery or Aves. I personally prefer Aves. You can find it on GitHub or Accrescent App.
