Contrary to what a lot of people suggest, having a "connection open" does not actually cause increased battery consumption. This is because a connection is nothing more than a sequence of routers with instructions that maintain a reverse path.
Now having said that, what some particular program does with that "open connection" could very well consume more power. For instance, if they are continually sending and receiving data through it, this will consume more power. Keeping unnecessary wakelocks will cause it to consume more power.
For example, I currently have FairEmail, Nextcloud, and a custom push message receiver, all showing "used for 7 hr 21 min" (i.e., since I took it off the charger this morning), yet my battery is nearly 90% still.
I've always found google services to be really sloppy when it comes to power consumption. If you don't have it installed, you're probably doing a lot better in terms of power than you would be.
