randomadmin Gmaps is a bit strange in this regard, but very easy to make it work;
Install, from F-Droid, GPSTest: https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.android.gpstest.osmdroid/
KILL Gmaps, if its running. To kill it, open the task switcher by dragging finger up from bottom of home screen (or press "square" button), and drag it away.
Then launch GPSTest and wait for a location LOCK.
When the GPS is locked, launch GMaps, and you'll see the active location in BLUE.
FYI: GMaps does NOT depend on google services/framework. It works ENTIRELY standalone.
