evalda I have a physical SIM card in my Pixel 6 Pro and eSIM. Can I install more eSIMs and switch between them?
dazinism Apparently thats coming to a Pixel soon™ Cant remember if it will be possible on existing devices or require a new phone model
matchboxbananasynergy dazinism According to what I heard, this should already be available on 7th gen Pixels.
evalda dazinism matchboxbananasynergy Thanks guys, just to clarify I mean having multiple eSIMs installed on the same phone and switch between them. Not using 2 or more eSIMs at the same time. Is that currently possible?
matchboxbananasynergy evalda Oh, my apologies. Yes, that should be possible today. If I recall correctly, 2 eSIMs and 1 physical.
evalda spiral I can confirm you can install multiple (I tested 2 so far) eSIMs in addition to the physical SIM. You can switch between SIMs as you wish, there are only a couple of caveats: To be able to switch between eSIMs, sandboxed play services need to keep running in the Owner profile. So if someone hoped to install Play Services, install extra eSIM and uninstall Play Services that won't work because for switching between eSIMs you also need Play Services Enable Privileged eSIM management checkbox in Settings get disabled automatically on each reboot, so you need to go in Settings and enable it each time you need to switch between eSIMs (if you rebooted since the last switch) Now I wonder if there is a limit of how many eSIMs can be installed on Pixel 6 Pro?
Gee evalda Hello, I came over your post by researching if multiple eSIMs are possible with a Pixel 6 pro. Did you happen to install more eSIMs since the time you posted this? I'd be also interested if you maybe found a solution for not running Google Play services in the owner profile? Thank you very much for getting back to me. greets
grapheneman "switch between eSIMs, sandboxed play services need to keep running in the Owner profile" this is big blocker, i would not install Google on owner profile, so glad i did not convert more than 1 sim into esim
evalda grapheneman If your phone supports 2 eSIMs simultaneously you won't have to switch, not sure if any current Pixels can do that tho
Gee grapheneman Hello and please, excuse my noob question: I do understand that the owner profile should have privileges over a secondary profile. Maybe you can shortly fill me in why sandboxed Google Play services are still an issue in the owner profile? Shouldn't sandbox eliminate a threat? I am fully aware that installing Google in GrapheneOS is very counter productive, first of all. But we all know, that there's almost no way around it. I am trying to limit the damage. Thank you very much ahead.
evalda Gee Hi! I haven't tried to install more than 2 eSIMs yet. I don't think there is a way to install or manage eSIMs without Play Services right now.
p338k Gee I am fully aware that installing Google in GrapheneOS is very counter productive ... It is only counter productive if avoiding Google is the goal. GrapheneOS provides many benefits besides Google avoidance such as increased security, and using Google software in the application sandbox even improves privacy from Google.
Gee p338k Thank you very much for your answer. I am new to GOS and just trying to wrap my head around things.
Gee evalda Hi and thanks. Yeah, I don't think so either, meanwhile. The "privileged eSIM management"is not showing in a secondary profile.
Gee evalda short update: I installed a second eSIM on my Pixel 6 pro today and I can seamlessly switch between those two. Also the "Add SIM" button still shows up and is active. If I press it I have the possibility to scan another eSIM QR.
evalda Gee Yes, eSIM management is available in the Owner profile only. What I do when I need to change eSIMs is enable Play Services in the owner profile, enable Privileged SIM management, do my thing, then disable both eSIM management and Play Services.
N1b Jay perfect timing as with the latest update you don't need Play Services on GOS anymore to activate eSIM.
Gee Jay I have this set up, yes. But as @N1b said, it's obviously not needed anymore. I did not test this though, because I need GPS on my owners profile for other reasons.
