Getting a decade out of a 1000€ laptop is a stretch, really. That thing will fall apart way sooner, due to build quality issues, mainly the display assembly breaking off on one side due to being secured by plastic molds.

I definitely should get my head checked. I'm also imagining my laptop then, the one I'm using to type these words.

I do go to restaurants sometimes. But I don't call that an "investment". Neither paying rent, obviously. I do have children and spend money on them, I don't call that an "investment" either, to me that's called raising them.

None of those things are "investments", and neither is buying a phone. I never said it has to be an investment to bring you happiness, I'm just repeating the word used to illustrate how ridiculous that sounds.

But we're in agreement here: if I'm actually looking for an investment, then I should never do any of those three, absolutely.

Quick question.

I'll probably buy one. I see it as a way to signal the interest to the industry, or at least to Motorola. (And I'd be getting a nice phone too as a bonus/reward :-) )
Do you/anyone have a clue whether the signal is clearer for the manufacturer/market if I buy at launch, or if I buy at the time of the announcement of support by GOS (I assume maybe there will be some difference) ?

Schiglip I don't think Motorola will know why someone bought a phone, so it doesn't really matter imo. I would just buy when the price is good, but most certainly after support for GrapheneOS is guaranteed.

Everyone is free to buy or not that phone. I understand that some people can't pay that much and others purchase a new iPhone every year.

Motorola is the first company to work with GrapheneOS and there will be functionalities and security/privacy features that can't be achieved with Pixels.

Some people buy coffee, junk food or cigarettes everyday and they never think about all the money they spend on those things but are crying and tell you that spending 1000€ on a phone is absurd.

In my opinion, it's better to spend few hundreds more if you can afford a better phone. It's not a waste of money, remember that you will use it few hours in a day for years.You can also continue to use a Pixel 8a and you probably don't need or want something else and it's totally fine.

All I know is as soon as a non-Google option arrives that supports GOS, I will gladly support it. F*ck Google. From their lean to AI for weapons and surveillance, to their aggressive data harvesting, to their manipulation of search results, to collaborating with the government to spy on people, to their negative impact on the environment, to freaking Project Nimbus. The sooner I can rid myself of anything/everything Google the better. And yes, I'm aware Motorola and it's parent company are no saints by any means, but the phrase the lesser of evils is absolutely applicable in this case. Once RCS is added to GOS, the only thing Google I'll have is this Pixel...until

paul7285 So many complain about the size of Motorola, but there is no difference between 6 and 7 inches, all are too big including every Pixel.

There's a substantial difference, I have a pixel 8 and a pixel 8 pro and the extra weight and width of the latter makes it unsuitable for me as a daily driver.

The pixel 8 with its curved back is the perfect balance if screen size and portability. Ideally it would be 30g lighter.

Excited as I am with the gos partnership I won't be buying the signature 27.

I think the relationship between the GOS project and Pixels are misunderstood. While Google might be antagonistic towards the project, they have received and merged some security updates pushed upstream by GOS.

As for hardware, Google might be dog manure for privacy but they do take security reasonably seriously and they have basically infinite money to develop the latest and greatest in hardware, certainly more so than Motorola. I personally don't expect there to be major security differences between both devices and if there are, I wouldn't be surprised if the scales leans in favor of Pixels. Time will tell.

Not going to spend $1200 CAD or more for a phone. I've got no need for anything like that anymore. I'm still using a 6a and a 10a is going to be my next device. Someday when Motorola has a mid-priced device perhaps.

It should be more secure against remote attacks but won't protect as well against brute force attacks with physical access. The secure element won't initially be as good as the Titan M2/M3 but it can get better over time. It's super disappointing that the Pixel 11 lacks MTE.

Carrousel7956 that comment is from when the GOS project thought the Pixel 11 lacked MTE (confirmed now to only be disabled), and that "it could get better over time" comment is aspirational and depends on whether Motorola will be willing/able to develop more secure hardware.

It's very realistic to provide better security than Pixels against remote attacks. It's far harder to provide a secure element as good as the Titan M2/M3. There will definitely be a decent secure element providing the current generation features including the Android 16 QPR2+ rate limiting design.

Carrousel7956 that is again aspirational, and doesn't solely depend on Motorola doing everything they can to improve their hardware security, but also on Snapdragon.

I, for one, am more concerned with physical breaches (loss, theft, bruteforce, airport security shenanigans) than remote breaches, so I value the Titan chip above Snapdragon. I don't care about the performance benefits of the Snapdragon chip since I don't game on my phone or do anything else intensive.

I nonetheless wish this partnership to be long, fruitful and mutually beneficial.

7 Pro here. Undecided what I'll do. We shall see. I want to support them bc they are supporting, at least the idea, of privacy.
