"AES broken says danish inspector!!!!!"
Every few weeks there are a few stories about GrapheneOS/Signal/encryption being broken across parts of the internet. These are mostly boosted by non technical folks who are being farmed for views or popularity by folks similarly unfamiliar with technology, or malicious folks who should know better. Any stand that shows the world worsening is of course fresh fodder for the algorithms that drive engagement.
Zero of them have been actually substantiated. When these vulnerabilities actually occur, they are not put up as instagram reels or twitter ragebait for earning a few dollars, but instead through proofs of concept and academic papers (or sold in seedier parts of the market).
Every story I have followed to end about forensics cracking newer GrapheneOS, including an older Netherlands one, through court documents and police filings itself, almost always the reason was:
- Bad OpSec (easy password, using "encrypted services for super duper protection from totally not a honeypot organisation", etc.)
- Obvious parallel construction where someone snitched on the culprit and police just claims they cracked emails/laptop/crypto wallets etc.
So it is always useful to not publish things on the forum that are unsubstantiated without appropriate research around it, and instead follow it through to verify. Maybe message the person who posted it, send a letter/email to the organization, etc.
Of course that does not always happen because boosting ideas and getting them fact checked by the internet is easier than verifying them yourself, but let's hope forum users inculcate a better culture than this.
I am not denying the possibility of this happening, just the probability, and would ask everyone who posts something similar posts with more proof instead of short quips with no source.
Desertstorm this one by a lawyer
I especially hate appeal to authority (why would a lawyer/doctor/scientist lie???? Because they are humans with greed and benefit in mind too).
Desertstorm This happened many times before to Apple
Can you cite sources for when a locked Apple device was cracked by breaking it's encryption? (Bernardino is not an example, modern ones please)
Desertstorm Maybe a GOS developer/moderator can contact the lawyer? Its to easy to just discard as nonsens
Maybe the developer time is better spent developing than chasing ghosts every time someone thinks they were hacked. Community members can always step up and ask for more information before speculating in public on the forum.
