I'm a heavy hotspot user myself and I'm fine with how it works. But I only use it by myself, so nobody else knows the password and whenever I don't need it, I shut it off.
But still: Now that real unlimited plans become more and more common, a more router-like experience would be nice. But I think this is something the AOSP project should implement!
