What file format should I use for notification sounds?

I've tried wav, 3gp, m4a (all 3 formats supported by the audio recorder app I've got on the phone)
But the GrapheneOS Messaging app refuses to add any of the above as notification sounds.
When I select the file, the app dropdown either reverts to whichever sound I had selected before or changes to "None".

Does anyone else use custom notification sounds? 🤔

I'd like to set a recorded voice saying the kind of notification it is. "Email", "Text message", "Discord" etc
