masshu i've now installed the signal app from the guardian repository on f-droid and i can both paste and manually type the special characters included in my recovery key.

Looks like the current stable release of Mollie is behind at version 8.7.3-2 which they released 7 weeks ago, but a pre-release of 8.19.2-1 was made 17 hours ago which is the same version as the latest Signal. So maybe that release will solve your issue.
masshu the only major downer that comes with the signal app from f-droid is that it will drain the battery faster.
That is what some people say, but I'm running Signal without Google Play Services and with the regular battery settings (optimized background usage) just fine. My Pixel 8 is using a fairly average 0.3–0.5% battery per hour on wifi in standby, the same as before I installed Signal.
I've used it on a Google-free LineageOS phone before as well with no battery issues.
