Silencing a ringing phone

How can I mute the ring tone when a call is coming in? I had looked for that, and got pointed to pressing Power+Volume+, which indeed worked. Seemingly.
I just didn't hear any calls/notifications after that for the rest of the day until I noticed that this is a permanent toggle :-P Isn't there a quick one-time silencing option? My 15€ Dumbphone had this....
(Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but this, a Pixel8 with GOS, is my first Smartphone...)

Pit Power+Volume+

This (usually) prevents ringing and activate vibrate till you activate the ringing again (in contrast to the one time volume down example above).
Configurable in Settings > Sound & vibration > Shortcut to prevent ringing

Try a single click of the power button while the phone is ringing (a second click would decline the call).

I recently had an incoming call, but no time to accept, pressed the power button once, ringing was silenced for this time only, that's the way I knew before.

I think the "Power button + louder" combination should immitate the iPhone's hardware switch for silencing the phone continuously.

Guess the answer was somewhere out there, just finding it is difficult when more people are looking for the permanent mute...

A single press on the volume down button always worked for me.
