Desktop Mode Experience - Android 17

TrustExecutor In previous versions it worked automatically but now with Android 17. ethernet doesn't seem to work for me automatically and I don't know how to do it manually.

For me ethernet is working automaticaly (worked in Android 16 and still with Android 17), with both IPv4 & IPv6 using DHCP as it seems there is now way to configure ethernet parameter manualy (static IP for example).

GrapheneRoberto Edit : Forgot to mention but battery charge limited to 80% is working on my side on desktop mode. Maybe I had to switch off and back again the limit to make it work.
Edit 2 : Wifi goes back when I unplug the phone, connection resume from ethernet to wifi automaticaly, maybe it's also due to what you choose as timeout for automatic wifi off.

Thanks for the feedback, concerning the battery: my phone was already beyond 80%, not sure if that caused issues. About the WiFi, good point! Mine is set to go off after few minutes of non-usage.

Adding to the general discussion: I am too using a non-standard keyboard on GOS and did not have major issues aside from super,ctrl,alt not being recognized some times.

Developer-Dude It looks like it should work. But the specifications for the Pixel's are unclear, so it may not have a 100% chance of working. Buying it and testing would work. Amazon has a very lenient return policy, so if it doesn't work you could just return it.

Similar on Instagram and youtube links. Delete the ? And anything after.

Usually on youtube it only gives tracking links if you press the share button, but that's the only way to share a link if you use the app. On the web, you can just copy the url and there shouldn't be any tracking, at least on yt. On amazon, they put every action you take along with tracking into the URL bar, so the only way is to delete unnecessary parameters.

Desktop mode is looking promising now that it accepts a display resolution higher than 1080p. However, it may be frustrating to get used to this mode for the time being:

The windows move up when you try to write something.
Resizing windows causes the current application to become empty.
The taskbar is not very good at keeping apps icons pinned or in use.

It was too difficult to write this comment on desktop mode, so I did it directly on my mobile phone.

I hope that a GoogleBook will be made compatible with GrapheneOS for use in both leisure and work contexts.

For the window that goes up when you select a text field, it can be due to the virtual keyboard / physical keyboard fight bug. Try to unplug physical keyboard, select the text field, virtual keyboard should appear, then reconnect physical keyboard, the virtual one should disapear and the physical one will be fully usable (at least for some time). Or maybe like others try another virtual keyboard.

We need to be patient.
Some users may also be interested in testing data leaks in Desktop mode.

Developer-Dude In usage is the cable that came with the monitor and a cheap adapter bought from a local electronics store. It works well enough. It's a brand of the store it was bought from, so it's lower quality, but gets the job done.

Just to confirm that I switched from Android AOSP Virtual Keyboard to Simple Keyboard on FDroid and there is no more bug. So it's probably a bug in AOSP that Google will never fix as I imagine that stock android is not using AOSP Keyboard.

GrapheneRoberto The first one is that I cannot use the full 1440p resolution of my screen using my UGreen USB-C displayport dock. It's not a dock or cable issue, as the same dock on the same screen used on a intel laptop is able to display the full resolution. With my pixel 8 I am limited to 2048x1024. If i directly connect my phone with a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter, then the phone is able to display up to 2560x1440, but not through the dock.

Same for me. Using a UGREEN USB-C DP dock with a Pixel 9a and a 2560x1600@144Hz monitor, I am only able to output at 1920x1080 at 60Hz. The same happens when I use a different dock with HDMI. Using a Thunderbolt/USB 4 cable directly allows me to output at 2560x1600@60Hz (unable to increase the refresh rate, however).

I saw something where Google mentioned in a support thread that the 9 and under are capped at 1080p.

On my side, I was able to do 1440p using direct USB-C Displayport cable, and 1920x1200 using ugreen dock. Same dock is able to do 1440p using a laptop, so it's not a dock or cable issue. That's why I suspected Pixel 8 bandwidth also to be too limited for 1440p + audio + ethernet + 4 usb adapter.

I don't face your issue with VLC, it works pretty well, sound is ok via displayport.
Overall I find Desktop mode very usable for basic task, like mail, signal & browsing. I found Vanadium adapt very well. But I agree with you it need more polish, AOSP keyboard bug, not possible to change wallpaper, and the mouse feeling is not so good so it give an impression of unresponsivness.

Is it possible to have desktop mode working on a laptop? I've got USB4 and HDMI, no Thunderbolt. Tried looking it up but I'm clueless 😕

Distress The idea is to connect your device to a display and peripherals (e.g. keyboard and mouse). It is unlikely that you can use your laptop in this way (the NexDock is explicitly made for this purpose, as an example). I personally use a portable monitor and bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

Distress you can have desktop mode working on laptop using scrcpy. works on windows linux and macos. I tried it only on windows though

Just tried desktop mode for the first time since upgrading to android 17. I was able to get 1440p 60hz using a direct USB c to USB c (thunderbolt) connection with my monitor with my Pixel 8a. So much better than the 1080p I was getting prior to this, but 4k would be ideal. Does anyone know if the 1440p cap is a hardware limitation or if it just needs to be implemented in software?
