Can't Reinstall, Update, or Open Proton Calendar

Hi all, I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue with Proton Calendar.

I had originally installed Proton Calendar version 2.3.X via apk file from their official source here:

Was running it for about a week, and everything has been great. I tried getting it to update via Obtainium, but did not have much luck. Was putting it off as a project to figure out later.

Then today I tried to open the app and it refused to open. An error message appeared (coming from the calendar app itself), telling me to update and offering an "update" and "learn more" button.

This is on the Owner profile, and I do not have Google Services Framework, Google Play Services, or Google Play Store installed on this profile. So as expected, pressing the "update" button doesn't work because it can't find an app store. It threw a 2nd error on top of the 1st, then it faded away and left me stuck in the 1st error again.
The "learn more" button just takes me to the proton documentation site, explaining that outdated releases are eventually barred from functioning for security purposes.

I then tried uninstalling the old version 2.3.X, downloading the latest apk from the link above (version 2.4.5 as of this writing), and installing that. According to GOS, the installation went perfectly. But upon opening the app, I get the login screen, then get the exact same error after a successful login.

I tried installing on a different profile via Aurora Store, and that went fine, app works perfectly normally. But I want this app on the Owner profile specifically, without Aurora / Play / F-Droid. Plus, I'm worried that this issue could eventually recur on different profiles.

I tried restarting the phone, then running through the uninstall-reinstall cycle again, but got the same bad result.

I tried resetting app preferences under Settings -> System -> Reset Options -> Reset app preferences, then doing the uninstall-reinstall cycle. But I got the same bad result.

After trying those things, I tried doing the reinstall cycle again just out of desperation. After attempting to open the apk, I got a new error message: "App not installed because package appears to be invalid."
I tried redownloading the apk from the proton app link above several more times, thinking that the original apk got currupted somehow. But from then on I got the same error, no matter which apk I used. Even the original apk downloaded from my first attempt no longer works, same "invalid package" error.

So somehow my troubleshooting efforts appear to have made the situation worse. Before I could install the app via apk and open it, but hit a wall after a successful login. Now, I can't even install the app via an apk.

How to proceed? Would love to get this back up and running again in the Owner profile.

Do you still have the app installed via Aurora in the profile you were testing with? I just tried, and the packages conflict, I'm guessing because they were signed by different keys.

If it's still installed and if you're logged in to Owner, you can go to Settings > Apps > All apps > Proton Calendar > 3 dots in upper right-hand corner > uninstall for all users.

I use the Google Play version and it works for me, also version 2.4.5.

Thanks so much for trying it out.

I did as suggested: uninstalled all instances of Proton Calendar, then cleared my downloads folder, then downloaded the new apk, then installed it via the Files app.

I am able to open Proton Calendar and sign in - but I get the same "update error" message immediately after a successful sign-in, blocking my use of the app.

I notice that GOS reports in Settings -> Apps -> See all X apps that I have installed version 2.3.14, whereas earlier I was downloading version 2.4.5 from the original Proton apk source. How the heck is this possible? Could this be some kind of server-side error on Proton's end, where they're delivering me bad old apks instead of the latest and greatest apks?

What version level is everyone else getting from Proton Calendar right now?

Hi, I made an account just for this zzz and I had the exact same problem as you.

The Proton Team is aware of the issue and it's being fixed, this is the answer I got from their support:

"Regarding the issue you reported, please note that our team is aware of it and will update the .apk file from the following link https://protonapps.com/protoncalendar-android as soon as possible.

In the meantime, you can download the file from the link below to install the latest .apk version.

Please don't trust strangers on the internet and download random .apks they are sharing. Do whatever you want with this information but it's being taken care of as we speak and for your information the proton drive .apk is working already.

This is not a GrapheneOS issue.

UseLinux if you look at the copyright on bottom of the page of the link you provided (protonapps), it's from last year, clearly not updated. The one I provided above (proton.me) is more recent.

Edit: in fact both apps are identical as of this moment (2.4.5)

For what its worth, Proton seems to have publicly confirmed that they own the protonapps.com domain:

Agreed that I should have been more careful with choosing my apk source.
The reason that I went with protonapps.com over proton.me was because I was struggling to get Obtainium to properly scrape the .apk from proton.me. Admittedly I was in a hurry and I likely missed something obvious, seems like it'd be possible to do.

I can use Obtainium to scrape Proton Mail and Proton VPN just fine via Github. (How do people feel about trusting Github to deliver apks?)
However for some reason Proton Drive and Proton Calendar do not have official repositories on Github. Hence my reluctant use of protonapps.com.

Thanks also [deleted] for the report of Proton's quick fix. This seems like confirmation that protonapps.com is legitimately owned by Proton AG, the well known business headquartered in Geneva.

FYI, Proton appears to have formally "archived" its offerings on GitHub, further indicating that GitHub is not a good source for Proton APKs.

Scratch that, it seems like Proton has actually just switched some things to new repos.

Don't forget to update Obtainium! This is an excellent example of the downsides of Obtainium - some work to track the right repos as projects evolve, and some risk of late updates unless vigilance with repos is maintained.

Looks like Proton Drive is now open source on GitHub - perhaps it'll make things easier when updating from Obtainium for some folks.
