1nix How long is the project expected to last, heard it has 7 years of support per device but will the gos project last that long
GrapheneOS supports phones as long as they are given security updates from the manufacturer before being placed in a form of temporary support before they get dropped from support to give users a chance to migrate off the phones before they fully lose support. They did this with the 4a (5g), 5, and 5a around 2024 and added this note to those later releases before they were unsupported:
Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5 and Pixel 5a are end-of-life and shouldn't be used anymore due to lack of security patches for firmware and drivers. We provide extended support for harm reduction.
Realistically, with how long pixel support windows are nowadays, you're more likely to break your phone or suffer some other hardware issue like a dying battery and need a replacement than need to buy a replacement due to reaching security EOL if you buy a phone early in it's lifecycle.
1nix Only other apple device i have are airpods pro 3, i mostly use them as generic bluetooth headphones (half the time connected to a pc instead of a phone), will they work the same as on any other nom apple device?
Yes, they will just pair as generic earbuds. Apps like CAPod or other airpod companion apps can restore some additional functionality to them.
1nix The rest of my family has ios 26+ so rcs should work, anything i need to know about(for example any issue with going from imsg to rcs?)
No issues that I know of that won't just be standard moving pains. I've heard of some issues where iMessage will hold on to your number even after the SIM is removed and people using iMessage may still be sending iMessages to your old iPhone or Apple account but I believe those can be mitigated if following proper number removal steps from iMessage and properly disconnecting your number from your Apple but I have not used an iPhone so please look into this further. Notably, try to get the iMessage users you communicate with to update to or past iOS 26.5 as then RCS with end-to-end encryption (E2EE) will be available for your regular communications outside of apps like Signal.
You may be interested in other apps like OpenBubbles which allow you to use iMessage on your android from your Apple account email (usually something like xxx@icloud.com) instead of your phone number and also have open-source reimplementations of the major GamePigeon games for Android via their sister project, OpenPigeon. Works well from my experience.
1nix My family tends to use find my quite a lot, can someone tell me their experience with alternative (for example grid?)
If you're looking for device tracking (like for lost items) there aren't many good options from what I'm aware of but FMD from @Johnnyloans response looks like an interesting option, although I haven't personally used it myself so I can't attest to it's functionality. For uses like location sharing with family, apps like Grid do work but I have had some weird experiences with the consistency of it between Android and iOS devices. From past experience (has been around a year since I last attempted a Grid sharing setup,) Grid initially sets up accounts and allows you to connect pretty easily but even when given background battery and location permissions it wont update the location passively sometimes whilst even in the app. Hopefully this has improved since then. If you have your spare device around maybe demo it out sometime with your devices before getting family set up on it.
