GOS Text to speech services

I noticed under the GOS app store there something new call GOS speech services. This is the first time I have seen something like this. I'm using a Pixel 9aw/GOS.

The first public release of GrapheneOS Speech Services is now available in our App Store. After installing it, it can be activated as a text-to-speech service by tapping it in Settings > System > Language & region > Speech > Text-to-speech output > Preferred engine and approving it in the dialog.

It currently has a single voice for US English. If you have the system language set to anything other than English (United States), then you need to change Settings > System > Language & region > Speech > Text-to-speech output > Language to English (United States) from Use system language for now.

It'd be interesting how much of an improvement between the model used now and their custom one.

If anyone is curious why US English. (My guess)

It is the biggest dataset. Mozilla ran (runs?) common voice. A project where people volunteer to donate their voice. They read sentences for training data. English has the most data. Other languages are harder to obtain high accuracy the less data there is.

It works fantastic under any profile and in private space on all of my devices. (P6a, P7, Pixel Tablet and P9Pxl)
It is really nice it can be installed and that it can run completely offline, it does not require internet permissions.
Amazing work, and it sounds great.
It seems very lightweight in comparison with some other TTS-applications I had been using.
Kudos to the developers!

No idea how soon it'll be. Probably not the near future. Android 17 will arrive before I think -- keeping the team busy. I'm sure they'll save time if there is documentation on what values the creator of this model used for training to use as a baseline.
Unfortunately -- for TTS -- there won't be a validation loss metric to cut training early if it's far off the mark.

We'll be able to train a better model to replace this one now that we have an RTX 5090 for this purpose. We also plan to make voices for other languages too.

Fortunately the next supported language (apart from other "varieties" of English like British) might be German.

Isn't English a deprecated language ? Wasn't French chosen as the language of reference by the International Board of Systems ans Standards ?...

It crashes on my P9 all the time.
Setting languages - with US English or my setting as first.

Replaced RHVoice and CoMaps voice directions now sound pleasant and natural.

This TTS should be such a quality of life accessibility improvement for GOS users who rely on TTS to navigate the OS and Vanadium, etc.!

And, GOS project developed and released this as an open project any Android user can install/will be default TTS in future GOS releases. So I believe this is the highest quality open TTS available?

What a great example of how software can/should actually improve our lives and provide social benefit! 💯
