I expect that if the GrapheneOS project wishes to make an announcement about the new gallery then an announcement will be made. The project historically does not announce dates of expected feature releases long in advance.

If I were to speculate, I can imagine that a new gallery app might show up in the "App Store" app when the project believes it's ready for users to test it. If that's what happens, I would not expect an announcement before it showed up in the "App Store" app.

Please note that I do not speak for the GrapheneOS project.

xxx You can keep an eye on it here, but I would be very patient since they're also working on a messaging app rewrite. I have a feeling they could wait until after the android 17 update though, so that there's probably less work.

Developer-Dude Based on Google's release cycle it should be some time next month. I would like to clarify though I am heavily speculating. Android 17 should be next month but the messaging app rewrite and new gallery could happen a year from now.

We do plan to make an SMS/MMS/RCS app supporting MLS end-to-end encryption for RCS compatible with Google Messages and future iOS MLS support. That would not be a Signal alternative/competitor.

I want to add since there was talk about the current messaging app that they are working on a rewrite of it to kotlin/compose.

They have a few PRs and just opened a bunch more issues.
Obviously no idea when it'll be ready or shipped, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were at the same time as the new gallery.
Correct if I'm wrong, but I do think they also said that they wanted to add RCS encryption to it at some point.

Just be patient though, with how close android 17 is I kind of expect them to wait until after.

There is an open standard now from apple as of last year.

It should be ready on iOS soon but I'm not sure about Google Messages.

I believe carriers need to support it though but that will probably happen soon enough if not already. Though as Graphene said this is not a Signal replacement since there is still the metadata concern.

Though I agree with you, I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

It's probably a long ways out. I think it'd have to be reverse engineered. Google doesn't tell the public how to add RCS into an app.

They plan to is a bit different than are working on. There's a lot of things on the 'plan to' list right now, it's hard to know if that means soon or eventually.

I just want to point out one thing about the ML stuff in this app. Probably it isn't an issue because the models that are being used are known by the devs and not arbitrary, but the app uses ONNX format which had caused several vulnerabilities over the years. Security may be a concern with it if the model files are being pulled blindly from another place (but I don't know if the model updates are frequent or what). It exists safetensors format which is more secure due to simpler serialization and less attack surface.

brucugu The model in question is baked in and specialized, probably will not get any updates and doesn't come from external sources.

Lusca Based on the pull request they are using the "nomaps with ML" for now, but do note that it seems to be an option on first launch to have them. It seems they are keeping the delete button for ML in settings too.
