VPN can’t connect after app upgrade

I am putting this in the off-topic section as it seems to be an Android 16 issue and not a GrapheneOS issue based on the issue tracker. For me personally I am unable to use the ProtonVPN app reliably anymore and have found using a wireguard config to work more consistently.

I was wondering if others are having this issue and maybe have found a different work around.

When you update Mullvad app, after you open it you get a notification stating that after a certain version of Android (I think 16), when you update the VPN app you must reboot the smartphone to make it work properly.
This is affecting for sure also ProtonVPN for this is an Android issue.

Proton VPN has been working perfectly fine for me on the Pixel Tablet, Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 9 Pro XL on the latest versions of the app and GrapheneOS.

DohnJoe yeah its the same info as what is provided in the issue tracker. For myself none of those fixes have reliably worked and even when they do the issue returns, even after the update.

Whereas just using wireguard seems to work all the time. Just a bit annoying as then you don't get all the features the app provides.

Honeslty I find it weird that Wireguard is more robust than the others, it should face the same issues for they are created by the OS.
Also because most of the VPNs are basically wireguard wrappers nowaday.

The tracker you linked is actually pretty accuarate (duh!) about the issue.
The only explanation I can think of is the VPN connection change.
It seems that among the solutions you have:

Phone reboot
Uninstall and reinstall the VPN app (without rebooting)
Switch VPN twice: one to change it with something else, one to revert it to your VPN

Maybe wireguard is doing the latest for you without notice?

Yeah it doesn't make much sense to me either as wireguard has said it has the same issue. To be clear though I don't use the official wireguard app, I use WG Tunnel, not that it should make a difference.

I am not quite understanding what you mean. Since I am just using a single wireguard config, I am not switching profiles at all while using wireguard.
