Graphene w/ play store/services Vs iphone w/ lockdown mode

I’m considering switching to a Pixel and using GrapheneOS, but I would most likely be using Google Play Services for certain messaging apps, banking apps, etc. I'd like the convenience of having everything in one place to receive notifications, etc. With this in mind, are there any major benefits for me in switching to GrapheneOS for privacy and security? Keep in mind that I would also have to purchase a Pixel, which is another factor to consider.

I’ve heard people mention that Google can still collect telemetry data in some cases, even without network access, and that each of the installed apps could also communicate with each other.

I also have concerns about using Aurora, etc., due to security and integrity reasons.

I would consider myself tech-savvy, as I’m a computer science student who is conscious of security and privacy and I daily drive Linux on my desktop devices. I’m just looking for some solid advice and info because I’m getting a lot of mixed information.

GrapheneOS doesn't persistently store notifications unless users explicitly enable notification history. For users enabling notification history, it's a 24 hour log that's cleared as soon as the feature is disabled again. This is the standard Android Open Source Project approach.

curiouscasual574 for context, I would be running a number of microsoft services because they are required for school, i would use the proton suite, mullvad, bitwarden, whatsapp, signal, and potentially non-encrypted social media apps for social reasons as well as spotify. Additonally, i would use banking apps and apps for transport.

One difference that hasn't been mentioned yet — and one I consider significant when switching from iOS to Android — is the availability of FOSS applications. While many privacy-focused FOSS apps are available on both platforms, they tend to have broader availability on Android, due to its more permissive app distribution model. You might find privacy-friendly alternatives to some of the apps you currently use — it's worth exploring what's out there.

On top of that, Android and GrapheneOS is generally a more configurable platform. Especially if you're willing to put in some extra time tweaking your setup, you can likely tailor your system for privacy to a greater extent than iOS would allow.

With GrapheneOS, you would have considerably better physical/remote exploit resistance compared to iOS. Plus, don't forget that iOS inherently has a lot of privileged apple services, which is а concern, especially when compared to sandboxed google play. On both of them usability is nearly identical, so pick the one that appeals to you most

kremlinkernel agree to disagree on "usability" . while I love the security of GOS ..... Usability? Far far different. And I know that's not all GOS's fault.... Specifically for apps like Turo.... But in general, and notwithstanding app compatibility, usability on iPhones is by FAR more easy, intuitive , and less finicky

kremlinkernel The physical and remote security is a good point, and i suppose if i want to use my phone like a somewhat normal person I will always be exposed to a certain level of data collection, but at least with graphene i have the option to use a private space or a separate profile for more sensitive tasks. I would disagree about what you said regarding usability though, from the research i conducted i can see that there's a number of issues i could run in to with banking apps, NFC payments and more. Now, I am someone who likes to tinker as i am a Linux user so a little bit of extra setup or config isnt a deal breaker.

IMO, GOS is #1, iOS is #2. If you value sovereignty then i would suggest going Graphene. Im not an expert, but i believe GOS is a more secure device. Unless you have been private from the beginning with your iphone, then you will gain privacy when you switch as well, for almost everything you do. It will be nice to get a fresh slate as well. So i believe you will gain security and privacy when making the switch. Try and make an anonymous google account with no phone # when you do. Give fake info for everything when feasible. Have fun with it. All that said, i like iphones in lockdown mode, and you can always switch back / run both.

In case you were referring to the iOS flaw that the FBI apparently used to recover deleted Signal messages: This seems to be fixed with iOS 26.4.2.

But I agree: The way notification history is handled on GrapheneOS (as you already mentioned) seems more privacy-friendly.

Those discussing usability. How much of that disappeared when you turned lock down mode on? I was under the impression it was a very different experience when toggled?

Dan-Jessen Lockdown turned my iphone into a literal dumb-phone in a bad way back when I had it, so I don't understand how they even compare. GOS doesn't impose so much restrictions on actions despite being more secure (eg, web pages breaking, having to allow everything manually, being fingerprintable among other iphone users, some other not-so-obvious stuff that you sacrifice for no reason).
