Could GrapheneOS run on my Moto G Play 2023?

Yes, I know very very well that GrapheneOS is only supported on Pixels at the moment. I also know that when Motorola phones will be available, old ones will not be supported, only the new flagship ones that come out. But I have a Motorola Moto G Play 2023 on stock Android 13. If I really wanted to go through the effort, would it work to compile and build GrapheneOS to run on this phone? I'm not looking to use it as a daily phone, just as an experimental device that I couldn't care less if I brick. Obviously the web installer wouldn't work, I'd probably have to build from scratch. Just curious if this is even possible, because I'd like to try if it is.

A big step is missing. It would be necessary to port GrapheneOS to the device. Device drivers and other frameworks would need to be adapted, and features that can't work (duress PIN) would need to be removed.

Depending on your prior experience it might take from one month to 11 years.

And, my honest opinion, that amount of effort might arguably be better spent developing some useful app for GrapheneOS. I think I hear lots of complaints about SIP clients.

Developer-Dude There was actually a very recent post about someone installing a GOS fork on Xiaomi (not advisable ofc), lots of discussion about it

Yeah, it sucks that there's not really anything for custom OSes to be installed on it (I'm not looking for privacy or security, just a fun project. I'll never ever use this phone for anything personal). I'd do LineageOS or /e/ if it was available, but nothing for the Moto G Play 2023.

Short answer: no.

G Play 2023 is MediaTek MT6750T based device.

One of the minimum requirements for official GrapheneOS build (in addition to manufacturer supporting it and opening the bootloader unlocking/relocking) is a a Secure Processing Unit (element, hardware on the SoC). Mediatek SoC in question (MT6750T) does not have a hardware SPU/element and thus does not pass one of the crucial minimum requirements.

Currently it looks like that the first (and so far only) Moto phone to get the GrapheneOS support in 2027 will be a flagship Moto device in 2027, most likely running Snapdragon 8 series Soc (8 Elite Gen 6), which has hardware SPU inside.

So, everybody asking if your current Moto device will be supported officially by GrapheneOS in the future: most likely no.
