No push notifications from Gmail or Proton Mail

Hello. I'm new to the OS and am receiving no push notifications from Gmail or Proton Mail. No lock screen, notification shade, or badge notifications. FCM (Firebase Cloud Messaging, Google's push notification system) appears non-functional.

Device: Pixel 10 Pro, GrapheneOS build 2026040801, clean install. Sandboxed Google Play installed to main profile via GrapheneOS Apps app.
Verified: Google Play Services and Google Play Store installed in main profile via GrapheneOS App Store app. Signed into Google account in Play Store. Notification permissions on for Gmail, Proton Mail, Google Play Services, and Google Play Store, battery set to unrestricted as well. Badges enabled for Gmail and Proton Mail. All apps up to date per Play Store.
Tried: Cleared cache and data for Google Play Services, cleared Proton Mail cache, multiple reboots, sent test emails to both inboxes. No notification delivered.
Result: Notifications / badge icons still not working. Gmail must be manually refreshed inside the app to show new emails. Haven't tested this on Proton yet.

I'm out of ideas. Anyone run into this issue before? I may be missing something basic.

Probably worth mentioning that Google Play Services must be installed before any app that relies on its push functionality. Some apps check if Play Services present only on first app launch, others check once in a while, it's possible some apps may not recheck at all (depends on app's implementation).
Apart from the installation order it's kinda the same with clearing Play Services storage. If you have working Play Services, then installed apps that depend on it, and then cleared Play Services storage (just to start fresh), then the apps that depend on it may not resubscribe for push, or at least not right away. So if you clear Play Services storage, clear all apps' (with dependency on Play's push notifications) storage also. Even the ones that had working push notifications before you cleared Play Services storage.

Thanks for the reply. No VPN or ad blocker in use. A full factory reset got proton to work perfectly. gmail receives emails but still refuses to notify on a clean install. Using Thunderbird as a workaround, which can take 30-60 minutes to notify, but at least does notify. Upon testing, it seems the mail client on iOS doesn't actually perform much better than that either.

Full factory reset now has Proton working perfectly. Gmail still won't notify at all, but Thunderbird will (after a 30-60 minute delay).

Veggies the iOS mail app is trash. The amount of push back I get from apple fans about it is crazy. Zero notifications until it's plugged in to charge.
