Should I upgrade now?

It’s almost time for me to upgrade my phone and I’ve been wanting to take that as an opportunity to move away from Apple. My struggle right now is should I take a plan on the Pixel 10 or 10 Pro or wait for the Pixel 11 to drop? I’m very new to Linux and Graphene as a whole and I’m unaware of what the future landscape is for Graphene. It’s probably too early to tell but will we likely see Graphene able to be installed on the Pixel 11? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

JDog_209 don't wait on any new phones that you can not buy outright or on installments because they will have to be OEM unlocked and any phone tied to an network operator isn't. Don't make that mistake.

EverettHitch thank you for the advice! I’ll pull the trigger on the Pixel 10 Pro and get started. Is there anything else of note I need to know? I feel like I’ve done my research but there’s still so much to know.

Keep in mind, this is just my personal opinion and up to you to decide.

I stuck with getting new pixel 9's and some others I got onboard as well due to the fact you have access to a physical sim card. Your end of life updates will be shorter, but I decided to take that trade off.

And another poster was right about not paying in payments and buying it outright. But I would like to expand on that.

Whether you get the 9 or 10 series, Bestbuy is a trusted source. The key is, if you go in person, be certain that they sell it to you "Unlocked"! Don't attach to your current or any carrier.

If you order it online, which you will probably have to if you decide on a Pixel 9 series be sure on Bestbuys page at whatever pixel you are looking at says " Sold by bestbuy" and look the page over to make sure it isn't reburbished. Also, be sure to select "Connect to another carrier later" (I think that's what is says) and DO NOT select connecting to a carrier below that first option I mentioned becuase that may very well lock it down and you won't be able to unlock it.

As a not so happy owner of a Pixel 10 pro XL I may as well chime in.

The wireless charging mechanism in the previous generations is way better. The one in Pixel 10 can barely keep a phone charged while at charging optimization limit. You can forget about it actually recharging anything. Apparently it only works on a small subset of devices. That's a defective product to me.

More importantly the Vanadium browser from GrapheneOS has an unknown bug that makes it consistently crash on certain web pages. You'll be forced to use a different browser but if you are using an app that calls the web view and it happens to be crashing you'll be cooked. This behavior is on the 10 series only.

This is the level of crap you'll be fighting on Pixel 10. I'd wait for Motorola or go with Pixel 9. You won't be missing anything significant and you'll get a fully functioning device.

I will just add my two cents for anyone else reading the thread with the same question. I think it is wise to update immediately rather than waiting for the Pixel 11 or even the Motorola GOS Phone, because we can clearly see all major governments moving in lockstep to implement age verification. Therefore, if you wait too long, the chances that you become locked out of your phone due to unwillingness to hand over ID become higher. This is what pushed me to buy a 9a, and I love it. My rational for going with the 9a was that I just wanted the cheapest, still-current phone I could find just to get me on to Graphene. The 9a is the cheapest thing that is still sold new on Google's website, so that is what I went with. Obviously, do not actually buy from Google's website, buy in cash if you can.

That depends on one's goals. Buying direct from Google makes warranty returns a lot easier! Some users may wish to avoid Google associating the device with a name and mailing address, but other users may not care.

I thought of making a post similar to this myself.

With the new GrapheneOS-Motorola device coming out around the same time Pixel 7's support officially drops, I'm wondering whether my next phone will be that device (which is apparently going to be absurdly expensive) or some newer Pixel?

I want the new GrapheneOS phone, but if I get a Pixel first I'll probably not buy it until several years later.

You can wait for Pixel 11 to be released because Pixel 10 prices will drop.
Also there are rumors that Pixel 11 is going to have new Titan M3 chip, if that turns out to be true, i´d rather get a Pixel 11.

I will personally wait for the 11th gen with the Titan M3. That chip will bring new possibilities, including probably quantic cryptography resistance, which I presume will become a standard not so far.
