"App Restart Required" notification randomly after turning on phone

When I turned on my phone this morning, it instantly said "App Restart Required. App Optimisation has completed" so I tapped on it to restart the apps. No idea why it did it. I don't believe my phone updated at all. It was very random. No issues since, but I'm genuinely curious as to what caused that randomly

nandohyphen1 Any chance you noticed your device being in BFU this morning? For example, if you use FP + secondary PIN, but was forced to unlock with primary method.

Are you really sure it didn't update? Just double-checking, but I know it was a while since the last update.

The only answer I can give is that there might be a bug in the code which checks for the optimisations.
I am not acquainted with Android code and how it works in detail, but I am decently sure the code is in the upstream AOSP (correct me if I'm wrong, though).

Yep, positive. As you said, its been a little while since the last update.

thmf no, don't think that was the case. I don't use Finger Print unlock. And my phone was right off too. I always turn it off at night to save battery.

nandohyphen1 Here's a wild guess. If Apps Optimization is triggered on first unlock and not only after the update, is it possible your phone got the (to be optimized today) app update yesterday? And the OS noticed there's an app that's not optimized, so it's time to do it. Not sure it works that way, just guessing.
I vaguely remember seeing just a few apps optimizing at some time (as in not all apps).

thmf its quite possible you could be right! As a matter of fact, last update did NOT optimise apps, so while late, maybe it is now for some reason?

No, that wouldn't be it, I've definitely rebooted many times before the last update, and as I've mentioned, I turn my phone off completely every night.

Had the same on my "old" p6 which is updated to 2026032001 since release, but run out of battery last night and at the restart this morning I had the optimization notification

On my P9 Pro I didn't had it (reboot every night) this morning after entering my pin going bfu to afu

Maybe you switched to a user profile that hasn't been opened since the update. It optimized those apps while you slept.

Johnnyloans don't think I did, but maybe. It hasn't occurred again, so I have no idea why it did that.

My Pixel 8 did this overnight. I had to unlock with pin. Then I saw the app restart message. It's as if my phone updated itself. This was kind of weird and unexpected.

There is settings > system > system update > automatic reboot after update finished

Or settings > search "auto" > auto reboot

Automatic updates are enabled by default and you can choose to reboot when you want.
