Now Playing Google Play app

I recently stumbled upon this article reporting that Google separated the Now Playing feature from Android Intelligence to it's own separate app. In the Google Play description, it states that it supports Pixel 6 and later with the March content update. However I do not see that it is supported on my Pixel 7, which is fully updated.

I did search the forums and found a comment from 2022 by 'matchboxbananasynergy' stating that, Now Playing "...needs privileges that GrapheneOS is not willing to give it."

Is this something that will solve itself overtime? Or is it hopeless to ever get Now Playing on GOS?

I'd guess hopeless. the lockscreen would have to be customized for this or create a shim. Knowing the name of the current song without unlocking the phone is probably their last priority behind security & privacy. They are generally hesitant to change a lot of AOSP and would prefer the changes to be added into AOSP.

Maybe another song identifier has a quick tile to improve speed.

You can put the widget for it on lock screen using Android settings.
As for the Google app, I assume it requires system privileges, and personally I'd not want it to be there by default. I don't think this will be a priority at all.

I just tried making that new google now playing to work. It asked me to install private compute and some other system component, which I did -- it then promptly said fu and return in a few hours :)
