Any way to receive group texts without RCS?

This has happened more than once but last night was an important one. My daughter had to go to the hospital and I was completely out of the loop because of this issue. I seem to receive a couple texts from a group chat then my google messages app tells me that I need to enable RCS to continue the group conversation and I receive no more texts. Of course, my app has been "connecting" to RCS for over a week now.

Will disabling RCS allow me to see and participate with these group convos or is RCS necessary for this feature? The "You must turn on RCS to continue" seems like it's a necessary element but I don't think it's ever going to actually connect.

Yes, turn off RCS in the same menu where it says rcs connecting.

I'd deregister RCS here to be double sure:

(So someone doesnt send you an rcs message and you never get it)

Any group chat of 2 or more people, you create a new group with everyone in it then send a message.

Have one person with RCS change the name of the old family group chat from "family" to "old family" or something. A clue to not use that group chat that has you not receiving RCS messages.

Any messages directly with one person will switch over fine.

It might take a little bit of time for other people's phones to realize you are SMS/MMS now and not rcs. Sending a text after all of this may speed up the process.

SMS/MMS lacks emoji reactions, higher quality photos, longer higher quality videos.

Maybe a messaging app like signal or threema would work for your family.
Your texting will work after all of the above.

Feel free to ask any questions or receive help here before it gets to a week of broken rcs.

schwim Have you tried the ICC toggle in the sandbox google play settings to get RCS to connect?

Johnnyloans Thank you very much. If the ICC switch doesn't make things better, I'll be following your instructions to disable RCS and let my groups know to form new group chats.

derpz Wasn't aware of that switch so I enabled it and will give it another day to do it's check. It says it's next attempt is tomorrow morning.

schwim seems to work better (at least for me) if you delete google messages - turn ICC toggle on - reinstall google messages and set it as default message app. Best of luck

derpz thanks very much for your help. I noticed that it failed to activate again this morning, so I tried what you suggested and we'll give it another day before deciding that it simply isn't going to work lol

In mid-January, I came to the conclusion that I was not able to rely on RCS working 100% of the time.

I de-activated it and continued to miss messages for 30 days, but ever since then I have been getting all of my messages from everyone.

After 30 days I was removed from RCS group messages, with that notification visible on a family member's phone.

Your family members will need to start a new group chat and add you back after 30 days and you will get MMS group messages without any problems.

I don't regret my decision to leave RCS at all.

Now I receive sms/mms messages flawlessly no matter which country I'm in.

Hi there guys, I just wanted to update this in case it helps someone or someone can suggest something based on the update. Didn't get RCS working when I enabled it and gave it a day, but I did end up getting in a notification from the phone stating that RCS would not work without enabling play Services the ability to use the phone. So I figured as a hail Mary I would enable that and give it another day. That was what it took to get RCS working the next morning when it did its check it connected and at the moment I'm getting RCS conversation successfully .

I'll give it a little bit of time and see if it's reliable before I commit to sticking with it. If if it's more trouble than it's worth, I'll go ahead and disable it, but otherwise it seems to be working on mobile with a pixel 9 running graphene.
