iPhone and (Stock) Android Face ID

Lots of iPhone and (Stock) Android users use Face ID (biometrics unlock) to unlock their phones. Some of my coworkers are those people. Sometimes they leave their phone face up near me on the counter. Isn't the camera always technically watching for a face to unlock the phone? Sometimes their phone wakes for notifications and I'm nearby, and I wonder if Apple or Google got a picture of my face. Just something I've become more aware of that annoys me to know Apple/Google could have taken a picture of my face. And another reason to trust GrapheneOS. :)

nandohyphen1 I don't think Apple or Google claim to upload your face unlock photos. There are apps that you can use to capture a photo after a failed PIN attempt and upload to Google Drive.

If phones bother you so much, you better not know how many cameras taking your face during day in the city.

Phones have the one image of the face to compare it with your face during the unlock. It does not picturing always, storing and sending your face to google / apple.

Datasapiens yes I realize about security cameras (I'm around those all day too), I just got thinking about phone Face ID. It doesn't bother me so much that I don't want to be around others phones, it just occurred to me once that that could happen though.

I believe the face unlock camera(or more than one) is a special type of camera (e.g. infrared) which is not taking the typical picture to compare with. Using the regular camera for facial unlock will be highly unsecured.
Also the processing is done locally only, or at least this is the idea. The same with the fingerprints.

I believe this only applies for IPhones, at least Google pixels don't have the dedicated hardware for face ID, which is why GOS removed face ID. See https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/8564-any-word-on-possible-face-unlock
(This deals with hardware, so it shouldn't be outdated, but keep in mind it is a few years old.)
