Looking for a program for Live Captions AND Translation

Hi there,

I'm headed to a meeting in Rome, and my Italian is not great.

A colleague told me about how PowerPoint can do live captions and automatically translate them, which you can use even without presenting. He told me he sat in a meeting and had PowerPoint open and it would auto translate what was being said with minimal delay. However, I've been using Linux for some time, and don’t have access to a Windows PC for this.

There are mentions online of various Android apps that will fulfill this function, also something built into Stock Pixels, but since I've been very happy with the philosophy of GrapheneOS, I'm looking for something that goes in that direction, as far as privacy and security goes.

Does anyone know of anything like this? Does it even exist? Unfortunately learning sufficient Italian is not an option due to the meeting being quite soon.

I got some decent work out of these two apps used in combination:

This is a good overall translating app.

This works surprisingly ok when I speak swedish to it.

I have no usage by Italian though, but since swedish is by far the rarer, it might work.

You may want to check RTranslate, as it supports walkie-talkie mode - you can speak your language and the other person - Italian. It also supports Conversations, if each person uses RTranslate, but I have never tried it.

One thing to note - I don't use RTran often, and previously it wasn't that stable. But within current iteration of re-check, it looks better.

GrapheneOS prioritizes security over convenience, so live transcription with translation is tough. Try Aegisub or a privacy-focused AI app via a web sandbox.
