Apple needs to increase the length of security updates for each iPhone version. Mine expires soon, I will have to buy an entire new iPhone to go alongside my Graphene OS based phone. Do they think I am made out of money? And then I HAVE to buy a new Graphene phone sometime because eventaully Graphene will stop updating that phone... How about I just go fuck myself?

i wouldnt trust that

from my time in the iOS jailbreaking community these updates wont fix major critical exploits, several iOS 15.x.x vers since 2023 didnt fix a major kernel exploit, and was only patched in the latest update bcuz of the coruna exploit chain

id only use an iOS device as long as the latest major iOS version is supported on that device, otherwise upgrade or switch to GrapheneOS

How quickly are iOS updates available to users when they are released? Every time I see the notification that an update is available and "will be installed tonight", I look it up online to see what the changes are, and for minor updates, I often find articles from a month earlier detailing security fixes that Apple says should be urgently installed. So urgent security fixes don't actually get to me until ₁ month after the fact?

It doesn't exactly make me confident about iOS security, vs. GrapheneOS where we know that critical security fixes make it to our phones as quickly as humanly possible.

It's possible that maybe I could run a manual check for updates every day, and that might make the update show up and download earlier, but I shouldn't have to do that, and the average user will never do that. Automatic updates mean nothing if they happen too late.

Ammako The iOS update flow is not great. The user has to go out of their way to demand the update other than when iOS is nagging you that it will update itself eventually, but this can take forever and some people still refuse the update. A lot of normies do not update their iPhone.

Axiomatically, no.

not-a-rola No, there will never be an operating system that is just infinitely perfect to not need improvements patches over time. There'll always be a vulnerability to discover no matter how difficult or time consuming it may take. Updates can also introduce improvements without needing to fix a problem. There's a lot of room for improvement on GrapheneOS, QubesOS and other security projects that isn't just changing an existing feature.

Not having updates would be a flaw, for example with YubiKey requiring a new key to be purchased should a vulnerability be disclosed.

While people don't like updates because new features or changes are personally disliked, they're still necessary for security reasons to have.

most the reasons come down to:

time and effort (it isnt as seamless as GrapheneOS, which is why i think more regular people should be using this OS, updating iOS can take a long while)

worried about bloatware or slowing older devices down, especially since iOS 26 and the liquod glass redesign

storage issues, considering updates can require an abysmal amount of free storage just to update, about 20gb free needed for my testing iPhone 11, its been a long time issue for users to not be able to update because of storage

back when i was an iOS user i used to despise updating my iPhone, but now on GrapheneOS i hardly ever even notice it bcuz it installs automatically in the background and auto reboots every night because my auto reboot timer is low

in court, it was revealed that apple killed your processor.
They lowered the speed from 1500Mhz to 500Mhz for example.
They said in court they didnt think to mention this to the user and they wouldn't want to know boring technical changes like that.

Out of the goodness of their hearts, they slowed down your 2-3 year old phone/iPod to help your battery last longer.

It was clear to me this happened to my 1st gen--update changed nothing frontend/back end.
I never bought an apple device again.

No one forced anyone to buy a stupidly expensive, easily damaged glass brick, with a glued in battery that will eventually wear out, containing software Apple could declare at a moments notice not able to run the next best thing of an OS, so your coveted glass status symbol is now EOL.
In essence the phone is never yours, its always Apples to control, consumers just pay stupid amounts of money, to prove to their peers how wealthy they seem to be, by waving a Glass brick about.

oh yeah, cheap second hand refurbished ones.
I have never bought a new phone, too easily damaged, lost, stolen and EOL too place too much money into them.
