Unfortunately, in some Discord communities (not all of them, of course), telling them their Discord setup is not the best, it's the fastest way to be banned.
NetRunner88 Discord isn't accessible without account.
Here things stay available to all.
This.
This forum is building (and will retain) a huge knowledge base, while services like discord serves communities in other ways, mostly creating bubbles (and sometimes biases).
It's more common in here to welcome an "outsider" and help him (or just chatting, like this thread) than in most Discord communities.
Of course this depends more on people in the communities than the tool itself, but for some reason, I found less welcoming people in a lot of groups.
Obvious differences apart, like account and content availability (Discord cannot be indexed by search engines), I would say this forum and Discord serve two different purposes.
I would even say that Discord (or equivalent tools) might be complementary to services like this forum.
In my opinion, Discord is suited more for informal takes.
Most of the time the flux is confusing and more than one person is trying to get visibility.
Messages can be seen as a flux of thoughts, or as a brainstorming more than a structured discussion.
Quality of the messages is on average lower compared to forums like this, because people take less time to reply, behaviour in loine with the nature of Discord (instant messaging).
But even before all of this, I would just have a look on how Discord use your data, and this in the past has been sufficient for me to delete my account after just few days.
Just to make an easy example, some years ago the official client defaulted on letting people see what game you were playing, or something similiar.
I understand ease of use, but some things should be opt-in.
I should spend my time tinkering on the app to add features I like (and be aware of what I accept) and not removing features forced on me.
That said, of course this is just a personal matter :)
Personally, I lived well without, and I will gladly continue like this.
I am just sad that some groups are there, and there only; I had to give up partecipating.
MuppetScalextric no worries Fedora is one of the most shitty distros anyways. Debian for life.
I have Debian on my personal computer, but I have to say that this is not a race, and chosing one, doesn't mean others are crap. Actually, Fedora ships stronger MAC (mandatory access control) security by default because of selinux.
