GrapheneOS + Motorola and Google Wallet

Hey all - so my phone is on the verge of breaking (the purple spots of death have appeared). I'm trying to decided today what new phone to get. I've not installed Graphene OS primarily since I rely on the ease of convenience of Google Wallet frequently. My choice is either buy a used unlocked Pixel 8 Pro on ebay for ~$300 bucks and run stock, then when the Graphene + Motorola phone launches get that (should it be certified for support with Google Wallet), or the alternative is get a free Pixel 10 Pro from my carrier (other than being locked into a 3 year contract, but bill credits so the phone is "free").

Essentially, my question is - what is the likelihood that the Graphene-Motorola partnership will result in a phone that Google Wallet is permitted to run on? (Yes, I understand this is Google's limitation, not Graphene's, but curious if a partnership with an OEM can change this)

It has been discussed and my understanding is that it is still on the table. As to what form it might take and when it might be available there is no public information available. But it's very unlikely to be as simple as Motorola signing a GrapheneOS image (licenses, contracts, profit sharing, etc. with Google; business, product, positioning concerns at Motorola; general priorities all around) and also unlikely to happen until significantly after the first set of Motorola phones with GrapheneOS become available.

Please keep in mind that you won't be able to run GrapheneOS on this phone.

wizoatk It won't work like that, to get it google certified, the OS needs to follow certain rules from google. major one of them being preinstalling play services other blot like YouTube, which makes the Graphneos something else.

The best thing we can hope is, moto creating a payment app like Samsung pay and support devices running grapheneos.

Just FYI, I use GrapheneOS with Curve Pay wallet and it works fine. :-)

LeslieFH unfortunately, from my understanding, Curve Pay doesn't have much adoption/support in the US sadly.

That's what I meant by "what form it might take". I would think that product branding, while important, would be one of the smaller issues.

Depending whethet it fits your needs you can find the Pixel 9a or other 9 series phones on discount in many places. Get pixel 8 series or above for MTE and 7 years of support.

I wouldn't hold out for the phone if you need a device right now, then get one now. The Motorola device is planned for 2027 I believe, and there is the possibility of delay or cancelling the device altogether. Knock on wood that won't happen but it's still possible.

AcclaimSublevel19 yeah, I'm aware the bootloader would be hard locked on a phone from my carrier. It was more that I'd like to use Graphene, but I also don't want to give up Google Wallet. I ended up just buying a used pixel 8 pro for $300, with basically zero blemishes. Now I'll have the option to run Graphene if I decide it's worth giving up Google Wallet. Or if Graphene releases a phone that Google Wallet certifies and does support, then I can switch to that.
