No Valid Operating System Found after Factory Resetting Pixel 8 Pro

I got a new pixel 8 pro a few weeks ago and successfully installed Graphene Os.
I forgot the pin today so I went to the recovery menu and factory reset it.
I then used the restart option in the menu.

Now the phone refuses to boot and says "No valid operating system could be found. The Device will not boot. Code 4"
Entering recovery mode also shows the same error. Same with rescue mode.

I don't think this is meant to happen after a factory reset. It should have booted to the device setup GUI right?

The bootloader is locked.

Can anyone explain why this would happen on a brand new phone which was functioning fine on the lockscreen before I had to factory reset it?

What is the most efficient way to fix this?

Either factory reset messed up or a hardware failure. The latter is more likely I'd say. If so, the hardware failure could happen again and possibly more frequently. Always keep backups of contacts and other data.

Look over the info here about side loading an OTA update. Your data will be saved.

There was nothing important on the phone, I forgot the password because I hadn't done anything on it except install GrapheneOs.

I'm confused about how to proceed from here.
Using the GrapheneOS web installer fails at the Unlock bootloader step. The PC detects the phone and pairs with it but the unlock bootloader button fails.
Perhaps OEM Unlocking has been disabled?
Is the phone done for if unlocking the bootloader fails?

I've never had an issue with a pixel 4a and pixel 6.

Save for the pixel 6 sometimes would refuse to connect to my previous car over Bluetooth or it is slow to automatically connect to a BT device. My 4a never had these issues.

DollyRags you will most likely have to sideload via adb. If you haven't done that before, also check the installtion guide for CLI until the step "connecting device" and proceed with the adb sideloading process.

Hello, apologies. I should have read your original post more carefully. (Excellent info provided by the way)

Code 4 is verified boot rejecting GrapheneOS. Going into the bootloader and doing a factory reset will erase the keys for GOS. They ensure that it is safe to boot that OS. After deletion, your phone doesn't trust GOS anymore.

Yes,if you were on stock OS. Bootloader factory reset deletes all but the OS. (This is outside of GOS control)

Go here for an easy web installer to install stock OS. Your phone will only trust Stock OS for now.

It will walk you through it. I haven't used this tool before but I must advise to double check the OS/phone you choose.

There could be 2 options:
- For example, options for: Pixel_8_pro_china and Pixel_8_pro_everyone_else.

This'll put stock OS onto it and then proceed how you wish--keep it or flash GOS again.

I don't doubt maybe you experienced issues with GOS in the past, but this isn't one of them. (forgetting your pin and bootloader erasing everything but the OS)

I can't boot the device into recovery mode.
When I select that mode via the GUI or by running fastboot reboot recovery it just reboots it to the "No valid operating system could be found. The Device will not boot. Code 4" screen.
So sideloading the OTA zip does not seem like it will work?

Also, when I tried using flashing the standard pixel OS from the linked website it says that OEM unlocking is disabled so i cant do anything.
I think GrapheneOS advises you to disable OEM unlocking at the end of the setup so I probably did that.

Anything else you can suggest?

Also get_unlock_ability from fastboot returns 0

Can you use the phone's GUI to enter rescue mode or recovery mode?

Sadly not. Selecting it in the gui just causes the phone to reboot normally to the error screen.
And as I said, the CLI doesn't work either.
Seems whatever happened it removed recovery mode.

Barcode mode works but that's no use.

You tried the 2 different modes in the GUI?

If they both don't work, then there is nothing you can do. Do a return or warranty.

Neither option works.
Seems like a hardware failure (in that case better it happened sooner rather than after I did something important with it).
Or a software glitch/power glitch/bit flip during the factory reset which destroyed everything.

Can anybody do a YT video on steps on factory resetting on GrapheneOS , I see lots of problems on resetting with Grapheneos ? Not back stock OS
