Unable to activate eSIM

I'm facing the same issue on my Pixel 9 (SKU: GUR25). A factory reset didn't help, and flashing back to the stock OS didn't help either. The symptoms are exactly the same as those described in this thread. I also asked for help on a Russian forum (4PDA), and some users there reported the same issue on their Pixels. Interestingly, this issue also affects users who have never flashed GOS before.

Is it still useful for me to submit logs?

I recently purchased a new Pixel 9 (non-Pro) about a month ago and have been gradually preparing it to replace my Pixel 7. Before setting it up, I flashed it with GrapheneOS.

On my Pixel 7, I’ve been running a dual-SIM configuration since launch:

Physical SIM for personal use
eSIM for business calls

Today I decided to complete the migration.

I inserted the physical SIM into the Pixel 9 and it activated without any issues.

I then contacted my carrier, Kogan Mobile, to request a new QR code to transfer the eSIM to the Pixel 9. After enabling eSIM support on GrapheneOS, I scanned the QR code. However, the activation fails with the message:

“SIM not activated.”

I contacted Kogan Mobile again and requested a second QR code in case the first one was invalid, but I am receiving the same result.

For context, I am located in Australia.

Would logs still be helpful in diagnosing this issue?

Rhythm Did you have internet connection while trying to activate the eSIM? Or are you using a firewall app like RethinkDNS or Netguard?

Rhythm Is EID visible under Settings > About phone > Device details?

Submit all 3 logs to logs@grapheneos.org and put @inthewaves in the email

If you want to submit more complete bugreport, then also attempt an eSIM activation, then go turn on verbose vendor logging to show more vendor logs from radio buffer:

Settings > About phone > Keep tapping Build number until "Now you are a developer"
Then Settings > System -> Developer options
Scroll down and find "Enable Verbose Vendor Logging" and enable it

Then go to Settings > System > Developer options > Bug report > Interactive report. It will take few minutes to generate a bugreport zip. Send this to logs@grapheneos.org

Note that a bugreport will contain more personal information hence why it should be emailed instead of shared on here. Same for the log txts above

As a side note, there also appears to be an possible issue with eSIMs on 9th gen Pixels even on stock OS (at least with Android 17 Beta), and several of those reports are from Australian devices (though there are reports from other countries such as Spain and Japan):

Yes i have an EID number, its all numbers and quite long.

Ive attached all the logs requested in an email and sent to logs@grapheneos.org.

I also have the same issue on a secondhand pixel 9a i got that had no esims added when i got it. I happily flashed GOS and was greeted with the cant activate esim message no matter what i tried being qr code or manual entry same result so i decided to go back to stock and from there it didnt let me either activate im kinda stuck behind a wall waiting for a esim adapter for the time being then. One thing to note is that in the ##4636#*# menu i get : eUICC info: [Available memory in bytes:-1] while in the about status on the phone i get the long string of EID numbers. If anyone needs logs im happy to provide on my pixel 9a (Tmobile) "apparently"

same here: Pixel 9 Pro, bought refurbished some weeks ago (so, no information weather eSIM was used before).
Once or twice booted with stock rom, without activating any SIM
GrapheneOS installed ₄ weeks ago, evaluating hardware and GOS for some time
physical SIM inserted ten days ago - works
last week tried eSim activation: fails instantly, under all above described circumstances.
playing around with carrier support some days... now i'm here - Hi all!

i could provide SIM-manager log (does it contain sensitive data?)

Hello, guys. First of all thank you so much for such an amazing bleeding edge mobile os. I'm using it for years and can't even deal with all other consumer stuff.

Recently I've got updated my device to 9 PRO XL... I didn't tested esim before flashing, so now I can't say if it could be activated or not with stock os. So, now I'm here, with the same situation trying to set it up, failing with the same error. I've checked up all of the troubleshooting steps with no results, except I've found this topic during my troubleshooting.

So, $1200 for the flagship device with the best in class os and many hours setting up all of the stuff I need for that device and stucked activating esim... Without even a hope to get it working. Uhhh...

Just to keep updated: good old pixel 6 with GOS connected like a charm with the same esim and wifi ap.

I have the same problem on a refurbished google pixel 9 xl. I still can install the same eSim on another pixel 7 with grapheneos. Physical sim still work.

I also have another question about this: is this a permanent break or can this be fixed in the future? Otherwise I would try to give the device back. But since physical eSim still work and i don't use eSims that often I would like to keep the phone.

Zuuq from what I have gathered from the forums it was hinted that it might be a hardware problem and since its not getting much attention from google it would not likely be fixed

If it was me, I'd either simply use a single physical sim.

Or if an esim is needed for travel or anything else, I'd return my phone and not get a pixel 9 series.

I have a P9:

activating esim worked always 4Sims
deleting esims worked
just activated an esim over mullvard without playstuff

I think this are faulty phones or carrier issues.

So this is 100% not an issue on the Pixel 10 family? Because my pixel 9 pro is in the free-return period, and I have the same issue. I can get a Pixel 10 (non pro) for about the same amount of money. If that would fix this issue, I'm going to do that. But I need to know if this problem doesn't exist on the P10 line :-)

It's primarily a 9 thing. Everything phone can have any issue though.

Some people with the 10 family have the GPU, powerVR, crash sometimes while watching videos or something. Most people don't have issue.
