I'd back up all of your data even if you send it as is (the courier could lose the device).
I would flash it to stock OS and follow the instructions for returning it.
Careful carrying your phone around in a tight-fitting pocket or even touching the screen could be damaging it further. Be especially careful of drops or impacts (e.g. inside of a purse and setting the purse down)
Try to obtain all information like the serial number soon. You never know if the screen will completely stop working.
Take pictures or video of the entire exterior of the phone--case off--including the edges of the screen. This'll be insurance if a google specialist claims that you damaged the device and it'll cost you or not be repaired. You will have proof there are no signs of damage. Take a photo of the serial number as well with your table in the background of the frame.
If google provides warranties in your country, the government likely has consumer protection agencies to assist if there's trouble
