Perhaps you could describe in more detail what you are looking for and what is important to you when choosing an email provider. Then you will probably get answers that are more helpful.

Tuta for me. The fact that their notifications don't run through google is important to me. Plus the apps are pretty solid.

I have a tuta and posteo, I'm not a fan of tuta, I find the app too sluggish, eventually I may live fully over to posteo

Tuta deletes free accounts just after 6 months if not logged in during that time. Can be problematic if you are just using it for one service, like a social media account that you intended to be private. Proton doubles that with 12 months at least.
Would be interested in what people use besides these two provider.

Proton needs play services for notifications. Tuta works without. Pretty easy choice.

for proton you can get unlimited alias, while tuta is weirdly stingy with it.

still, for proton you should be aware that the ceo posted something that supported the republican party around a year ago, and i would not support them based on that

Tuta has a deal with addy.io for more aliases, but then your managing two apps.

Fastmail does aliases well and prefetches images so they can't track you. But its not zero knowledge anything. Only encrypted at rest.

Functionally pretty similar, you can pay with monero for tuta. Proton seems to have shady marketing if that bothers you and some other issues that might discourage you from choosing them (https://x.com/DoingFedTime/status/2030108076531995016), in terms of protection tuta rejects more requests from law enforcement (not sure if that is necessarily better though). If you don't care that much about having some agency looking for you just use which gives a more preferable offer and user experience for you, email is email at the end of the day and it has its own inherent flaws. I recommend the x article regardless though, it's very informational.

Email was just never intended to be so secure, and they have to dance around that limitations like everyone else...
Regarding the link, people can pay cash. He mentions it but focuses then on ridiculing bitcoin payment option.
He claims you cant create an account with a VPN active. You can, I did some weeks ago.
Proton said on Reddit, that if the user would have deleted his payment info after paying for his subscription, they would have deleted it too, rendering them unable to give the info to anyone else = user fault.
And even with all said, Proton didn't release email content in those 40000 requests. And comparing it to just 200 requests for Tuta percentage wise seems unfair.
Maybe they are aggressive with marketing, but in the end the user needs to get educated.
