Phone as a Workstation

Does anyone knows a way to possibly use my phone as a workstation with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. I understand it won't be like a proper desktop but all I need it for is to type emails and edit some word documents. I’m looking for guidance and tips on how to make the most of this setup especially for productivity.

Works just fine for that. It already has usability features for window management, and even virtual desktops so you can group windows to few. Resolution is limited to FHD 1080p though.

Pweh12 In QPR2 (that GrapheneOS is now) desktop mode is desent enough. I have some bugs when i plug usb-c to the lapdock, sometimes its freezes or disconects but other than that i think its great. Also some bugs when i open apps, that they have biometrics (not all times but some times). In the first time i use it, the phone did some unexpected restarts but after that its ok (i don't mean when i enable the desktop mode in developers). Any way we have to wait until google releses the QPR3 or the Android 17 to have it in stable. I read (from articles surface on internet) that its very good experience with minimum bugs. Also if you are not using only english and you want another language i didn't find a way to do it with Futo keyboard or heliboard. Only the AOSP keyboard can switch languages. The problem is with AOSP keyboard in my language we don't have auto correction or all the good spelling stuff. Anyone knows a way? Also anyone knows when QPR3 will come (i know google said Q2 and Q4 will relese from now on...) to GrapheneOS? Maybe devs have some early access now they partners with motorola?

For me, desktop mode works decently well but still has many bugs. Google seems to be working heavily on polishing the desktop mode for upcoming AOSP releases so it will get better. For office suite I use Onlyoffice. Haven't tried it in desktop mode though.

Johnnyloans even better: if you have some spare change, get a nice office monitor that has a built in hub. One that provides PD, USB ports, preferably even additional USB-C ports and Ethernet. I have one now from Philips and it's the best thing (arguably, for my MacBook - but principle applies). No more cable clutter, it's all just connected to the monitor and it's just one TB4 cable that runs to the Mac. This will be even more enjoyable on a phone (not having a thousand cables dangling from the dongle).

I haven't used desktop mode. I saw no one mentioned how to enable it and what you'd need. I doubt there are any apps that enhance desktop mode as a whole.
You'll have your preferred email app, PDF app, etc.

Sadly, the presence sensor only works in Windows :( but the rest is awesome!

Interesting to know.
Desktop mode is in beta--hidden under developer options--and should be improved upon.

Johnnyloans okay I figured it out if I touch my phone screen while in desktop mode, my keyboard starts controlling my phone. If I don’t touch the screen, it just controls the monitor. Also, my monitor has some USB ports, so I can plug a keyboard and mouse directly into it, which makes everything much easier.

linuxaki88 One other thing is that you have to enable "stay awake" in dev ops because all the times the screen of the lapdock goes to sleep and then when wakes the keyboard does not work and you have to unplug and plug it again (very anoying)!

Only thing I'm aware of is to install Gboard and set it as the spell checker
Settings > system > keyboard > spell checker

After you change settings inside of gboard, you might be able to unselect it as an available keyboard if that bothers you. I haven't tried it.

There is an open source tool that various apps use but those apps must have network access. :(

linuxaki88 Android 17 is the upcoming major release of the Android operating system, officially announced with Beta 1 released on February 13, 2026, followed by Beta 2 on February 26, 2026. It is part of Google’s new annual SDK release cycle, with a stable version expected in June 2026.

Just seen this online so I'm assuming June we will have a full on desktop mode.

linuxaki88 yes this kept happening also was trying to figure a solution for it. I think it's because my phone was set to lock every 5 seconds .
