Proton calendar and Garmin watch event sync issues.

I've been looking for a solution to an issue I'm facing with syncing calendar events to my garmin instinct watch.

What I am looking to achieve:
When I add an event to proton calendar it will automatically sync to garmin connect app and then to the instinct watch

What I am observing currently:
Events added to proton calendar show up there but are no syncing to garmin connect app.
Garmin connect has permissions to the calendar in settings.
I don't seem to be able to add proton calendar as the default calendar.
This process worked fine using stock android/google calendar.

There are a couple of threads on the forum mentioning calendar issues. I can see that GrapheneOS / ASOP has a default calendar listed in the system app list but this appears to be disabled.

Does anyone know of a way to get this to work as intended? I've found an app for intent intercept which I might be able to get to work but I just want to check I have not missed anything.

Perhaps some one else will chime in with more experience with this.

There isn't a way to set the default calendar.
Try giving "google" (not google play services) the calendar permission.
Try adding a calendar event into any other calendar apps you have and see if anything syncs to your garmin watch.

So. The only way I could make this work was a little on the janky side.

To make it work, I had to create an ical link to my personal calendar in Proton. Then install ICSx on Android. Then sync the calendar to android via the iCal link. Doing that added events to the Android calendar where the Garmin could pick them up and sync them.
