Guys I don't understand what's goin on anymore. 🙂
I need a gmail for a temporary business.
So I create a private space.
I go to aurora store, download Gmail.
Going to gmail, to create an account
Adding name
Adding date and gender
Selecting one of suggested mails
Creating password
And getting a 'verify your phone number' message.
What number? I haven't provided any number!!! Ok, I tap on the only available option 'verify' and observing a spinning circle.
Getting 'you may need a SIM card or esim to continue verification'.

1) google's gmail application actually requires you to also have "play services" installed.
2) you don't need to use their application to be able to use gmail! You can use ANY email client you like, I'd suggest Fairemail, but Thunderbird (aka k9mail) also works.
3) set up the account on a desktop computer in a web browser.

What? Corps are fighting bots, what's not clear. Don't be greedy, pay a buck to those thrown-away verification number rentals and verify your acc.
This experience will pay off as, probably, companies will do this more and more often, be it google, x, meta, younameit

testing you mean that before starting to use services like gmail (via app), one has to go to the account, enable 2FA (OTP etc) and only then start using the acc? I think I saw recommendation to enable 2FA (to avod ban or need for a phone number) here on the forum, so no wonder.

littlerack i do not have an account, I tried to create it via Gmail app at once. The try to do this via computer's browser, yes, gets me to the qr stage, where I, after scanning the code and following the link, am getting the same SIM notification shit.

No, last time i tried to create a gmail account, instead of asking me to receive an sms code, It wanted me to scan a QR code, and then send an sms code to their system.

DeletedUser699 did you use a VPN? If so, try again with the VPN set to a server in your own country. Worked for me recently. If your VPN makes Google 'think' you're in a different country than you actually are, sending the sms after following the link provided by the qr-code won't work.
I also used an incognito tab in my browser, but I don't know if that matters.

DeletedUser699 frustrating! I had some false starts too, but it worked for me using:

Linux Mint laptop
Chromium browser, incognito mode
Mullvad VPN set to a server in my own country

Guess I got lucky? Hopefully you will too!

Earlier today.

I don't use the Gmail app, by the way, so Play Services are not involved. I just needed a burner Google account. Tried before without success, this morning it worked.

You can use gmail without using THEIR SOFTWARE. You can use fairemail or k9/thunderbird WITH gmail. Your email address will be YOU@gmail.com, and when you send email from it, it will come from YOU@gmail.com.

Have you tried different ways, e.g.:

form your computer via https://accounts.google.com/
via any other G. apps like Youtube, etc.

Oggyo I tried every possible way.
