Autorotate + Picture-in-picture can brick your phone

PleaseBeKind Your phone is a brick if you can't install a working OS on it. What you experience is just a glitch albeit a visible one.

Try holding power button for more than 30-60 seconds. Does this help to shutdown the phone while in this state?

I agree with thmf: it would be great to hear what happens if the device is in that state and the power button is pressed continuously for 60 seconds.

I was using the word "brick" to mean non-functional. Though thanks for correcting me about its proper usage.

I did try the "hold the power button for more than 30-60 seconds" trick, and it worked! (In the non-glitched as well as the glitched state). Wish I knew it sooner as I was locked for hours on end two separate times. I had to let the battery drain out the first time and waited for auto-reboot the second time.

Still, I'm sure any unsuspecting user who trips into this glitch would freak out when they are locked out of their device especially because they wouldn't be able to access the power menu (their sense of control over the phone).

I would love to know whether it's me (the dum user) who has broken something in the system settings to cause this to happen or if it's actually the fault of the operating system.

(Btw, I did make a separate user profile to test this so that no system settings toggles were touched by me, and I still managed to reproduce this glitch.)

Can you guys replicate this bug? Is it just me? I need to know!

Standard Miranda questions;
Have Adb, Shizuku, and+or SystemUI-tweaker or suchlike been in use on your device at any time for whatever reason?
Have you enabled Developer options, in this case particularly, to change system animations settings this way?
Is your bootloader re-locked after GrapheneOS installation?
Is your device updated to the latest GrapheneOS release, as of writing this would be 2026021200 or 2026021201?
Any apps granted Device Admin role/permissions?
Any Accessibility features active?

Lastly, use your Auditor app and check device integrity.

My screenshots are all black unfortunately. The Wallpaper is normal but everything else is rotated 90 degrees and placed at the top of the screen. half of the UI is gone--naturally.

No you can't.

One should think while picking up words to use. "Brick" is a brick, a state when you can't do anything with it without major help from technicians.

As PiP is kinda popular feature, as well as PiP, and there are no massive reports, it should be something with your individual setup.
NewPipe works just fine for me with auto-rotate and PiP.

littlerack VLC media player never ~~bricks~~ glitches for me either. There are some apps that do not exhibit this behaviour and Newpipe for you could be one of them.
Can you say the same for Vanadium/Brave browser? Try Disabling Javascript ---> Go into horizontal UI mode via auto-rotate ---> Play any video on archive .org ---> Click on the three vertical buttons and press the "Picture-in-picture" button (inside the video player) ---> Go into "recent apps" display (still in horizontal mode) ---> Swipe the app off the screen ---> Lock the device by pressing power button once.

Sorry for not clarifying how to play video on archive .org without JS.

(Remember that "archive .org" is not necessary, and that you can use any website that allows you to play video without javascript in order to produce this glitch.)

Here is how to play video on "archive .org" without Javascript:

Step 1: Search for a generic video title in Vanadium/Brave like "cute dogs videos archive .org".

Step 2: Tap on the relevant website link (usually the first one).

Step 3: Archive.org gives you the message "video player theater requires JS". Ignore it and scroll down to find "Show all" and tap on it.
It takes you to a page with a bunch of links.

Step 4: Locate a video link with the ".mp4" at the end. Tap on it.

Step 5: Enjoy the video in the built-in video player of your browser :)

(Or try to replicate the glitch)
