Is RethinkDNS necessary on a GOS phone?

I'm using it and though it's not completely stable (I suggest to check their git for active issues), its advantages so far outweigh all the glitches.
For example, I use on-device blocklists (like Hagezi ultimate) in combination with upstream cloud DNS resolver. The amount of domains blocked by upstream is now below 5%. And my use of upstream resolver is now 1/3 of what it was before I've installed rdns.
That means all those requests are simply not even leaving my device and don't hit network.
Bear in mind, that as with all dns-based filters, you don't know if apps are going crazy on retrying to reach certain tracking domain thus having negative impact on battery.

I installed its latest stable release, which is nearly two years old, now. Since I don't have Obtainium obtainiuming beta releases, I just settled for that, but Rethink is pinging me (in-app) that there's an update available on the website (all the betas between June 2024 and now). Is it prudent to disregard the beta designation to stay up to date, especially given the huge time gap since the last "stable" release?

As a (partial) fix, one can use a VPN with DNS service + split tunneling.

Using RDNS would take the vpn slot anyway, with the split tunneling you could have exceptions per app and have two main groups: restricted dns apps and regular apps.

I don't know if this adds anything to your setup.

If RDNS already has split tunneling I would say this doesn;t actually add anything.

I am sorry for the confusion, let me rephrase it.

I don't know RDNS, so I am not sure if what I am saying is actually adding something or not.

Because RDNS needs the vpn slot, you could think to just use a vpn service with dns service (like Mullvad) and use split tunneling to manage exceptions.

I just added at the end: "If RDNS already supports split tunneling, this idea is not adding anything new"
