Dear fellow GrapheneOS users,
I would love to hear your opinion on the following:
I bought a Pixel 2-3 years ago. Unfortunately, a purple vertical line appears now on the display, which seems to be a hardware display error. If you press the display it sometimes disappears and then reappears again after using it for some time.
I found that this concerns a batch of Pixel 8 devices and Google has implemented an Extended Repair Program where they change the display.
I have checked IMEI and I am eligible.
I also checked this forum and other internet resources where it is stated that installing a custom ROM should not void warranty (at least regarding hardware issues).
However, I am thinking about not sending my phone in, because I have just too many different profiles, apps etc. to backup and then restore it after repair. What I have read you have to give your PIN to the repair shop, so that they can run tests. So either you entrust them with your most personal data or you factory reset your phone and restore it afterwards, since GOS has no repair mode as the Stock OS.
Usually when I buy a new phone, switching is still cumbersome, since GOS has no viable backup solution, but I have the old phone at hand, but without that, I find it really hard to restore the phone exactly to its prior state.
So in total, I love GOS, but it is really unfavorable to users that GOS has no full backup solution and/or repair mode. I have read many threads concerning this topic and I understand that the devs don't want to have a "pay for a feature" system, but a viable backup solution is promised for a very long time now and is being highly demanded by users, so why not make an exception?! I think a lot of people that are giving to GOS would be willing to add a few more dollars. I'd give a triple-digit amount for that feature ;)
Anyhow, I am happy to hear your replies and experiences.
Has anyone of you:
1) Used the Google Warranty Program?
2) Has anyone else the same issue with their Pixel 8? And used the Extended Repair Program mentioned above?
3) Do you have any viable backup solution for users like me who have a lot of different profiles and apps and many individual settings?
4) What would you do? Would you use the option? Since it is expiring 3 years after purchase, I will have to react very quickly.
Thanks for your comments :)
