What is your favorite gallery app and why? Your review could be useful for https://github.com/GrapheneOS/os-issue-tracker/issues/48 which says GrapheneOS will replace the default gallery app (upvote to help prioritize it and not comment "when? etc as not useful"), if app performs good and meets GrapheneOS requirement it, they may work with maintainers and so they can develop it and ship to GOS by default instead of the one currently used (AOSP)

In some cases, licensing is also an issue. GrapheneOS is permissively licensed and is usable for building devices with an immutable root of trust. GPLv3 is deliberately incompatible with these kinds of locked down devices, unlike GPLv2 code such as the Linux kernel. This means GrapheneOS can't include GPLv3 code without forbidding use cases we want to support. GPLv3 is no problem for our own usage, but we don't want to forbid using GrapheneOS as a replacement for the Android Open Source Project in locked down devices.

Aves Libre from the Accrescent Store works fantastic for me. Has all the features you would expect, lots of customization.

I use fossify gallery. It works well. It is pretty close to the Samsung gallery I used and enjoyed.

Tried pretty much all the up to date FOSS galleries and eventually settled with this one.

Kid you not, It's called "Gallery".
It's fast and very well made, also one of the few that has HDR support (should be mandatory with our Pixels imho).
Edit functions may not be as good as Google Photos (no one is), but are well above average and not far off.

Aves supports Motion Photos, but doesn't support HDR on Android. It is also built with flutter which might be slower compared to gallery apps built with native Kotlin.

Most other galleries support HDR tho.

I'm extremely happy with Lavender Photos. It's simple, modern and has everything I need from a gallery! It's also pretty customizable and has support for backing up to Immich (although the official app is much better for that).

Aves is awesome. Dev just needs to get on board with Material design guidelines (system font, etc), or at least provide it as an option. 😛

That said, Aves might be too "complex" if security is to be prioritized. I believe it does some DCL (for video?), for example. More code, more possible attack vector.

Clearly the superior option as features go, though. Vetted by Accrescent. I'm a happy user. 👍

Added to my "Wishlist" category in Obtainium. Will take it for a spin, and see if it beats Aves.

I find the default to be pretty bad - youre very limited in how you can browse through photos, it feels like a glorified file explorer

I tested a whole bunch, ultimately landed on Aves. It has the best range of features, and sorting through photos felt very natural

Default < Simple gallery << fossify < Aves

The only drawback: Aves does not come with photo & video editors, it's only a gallery. I have not yet found wonderful apps I am satisfied with in that regard

I agree, I always change the gallery app on every secondary profile.
