Hi
Can anyone help me import my sms and call history as I migrate to Graphene OS on a Pixel 9a with Android 16 (updated 5 Feb 2026)?
This is my first time using GOS and I’m at a dead end with this obstacle, having spent many hours with AI trying to overcome it.
I have exported the following from my old phone (Android 10) using SMS Backup & Restore v10.24.003, with version='1.0', encoding='UTF-8', standalone='yes’:
- callhistory.xml (160KB)
- smshistory.xml (26Mb)
The AOSP phone and messaging apps don’t appear to have an import function so I’ve installed Fossify Phone (version 1.11.1) and SMS Import & Export (version 2.8.0-standard).
Both applications are producing the same problem since they use the same interface for selecting which file to import. When I am browsing for the file to import, the xml file is displayed in the relevant folder, but nothing happens when I tap or long-press it.
I’ve made Fossify Phone and SMS Import & Export to be the default apps and have ensured they have all permissions required, and I have not set up storage scopes on either of them.
As a work-around suggested by AI, I’ve also tried putting the two xml files in the downloads folder and restarting the phone (as apparently some builds automatically detect and import the xml files from there upon restart). This didn’t help.
Note: I have successfully imported contacts using the AOSP Contacts app and selecting the .vcf file
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. Would really like to be able to give GOS a go.
